The Dubai e-government stand will be more than twice as big as last year at the annual Gitex computer show early next month. The 26 participating departments will showcase around 1,000 services available over the Internet in Dubai, up from 600 a year ago.

The Middle East creates the biggest number of virus threats per capita in the world, according to new data from Symantec (see Executive Interview). Attacks were up from 19,262 to 31,542 in the first half of 2004 versus H1 2003. Officials blamed free Net access in Egypt and unemployment among young people.
MTC-Vodafone has launched its Enhanced Data Rates for GSM service in Kuwait which improves data download rates on mobile phones, laptops or PDAs. This service was first introduced in Bahrain last year and also enhances reception in areas with a high concentration of users.

Oracle announced that Kuwait's Refrigeration Industries and Storage Company has selected Oracle E-Business Suite as the basis for its e-business transformation. The modules acquired include financial accounting, procurement, inventory, order management, production and planning, human resources and payroll, projects, and maintenance management.

Global Technology Services has concluded a contract with Qatar Fuel Company to roll out Oracle's E-Business Suite within 6 months. QFC is a Qatari public company with Qatar Petroleum as a major shareholder, and distributes gasoline and diesel, LPG and aviation fuel.
Hewlett-Packard has increased its share of Unix server business by 330 per cent at the expense of Sun, MD Joseph Hanania told Gulf News. He claimed a 45 per cent market share to Sun's 16 per cent, and said it was now a two horse race with IBM. HP has been increasing its share in the enterprise business sector despite a decline in the overall market.

Jordan's telecommunications market will be fully liberalised by the beginning of 2005, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission President Muna Nijem announced on Tuesday. She said that with the end of Jordan Telecom's monopoly over the fixed-line, the market will be fully subject to demand and supply.
Telephone calls in the GCC states will cost around 40 per cent less thanks to an agreement by GCC Communication Ministers earlier this week in Riyadh. Rates imposed by telephone companies will now cost 0.15 Standard Downing Rate per call, down from 0.24.
