KSA readies e-Government portal
The Kingdom's march toward e-Government is to include the announcement of a portal shortly, Communications and Information Technology Commission Governor Dr. Mohammed Al-Suwaiyel told Arab News. He said the education sector was not being ignored and a concrete practical approach was being adopted to expand the use of computers among students.
IDC puts HP top for server sales
New market data released by IDC for Q2 revealed that HP is the market leader in regional International Standards Servers sales in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. In the UAE, HP has a 65.7 per cent market share, with an annual growth rate that exceeds that of the market by 5.5 points. In neighbouring Saudi Arabia, HP has a 40.8 per cent share and 50 per cent in Egypt.
Samsung, new slide-up camera phone
Samsung Electronics has launched the SGH-E800 slide-up camera phone for customers in the Middle East. The new phone is equipped with the latest in mobile features including the world's first voice-clarity feature that automatically senses the background noise to increase sound clarity, and an echo cancellation technology to enable enhanced conversations over the speakerphone.
Tejari CEO to address global PRs
Tejari CEO Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi is to be a key speaker to address the 49th Annual Conference for the International Public Relations Association to be held in Dubai December 13-14. Sheikha Lubna has managed the region's first online marketplace since its launch in 2000. She noted effective PR has been an integral component of Tejari's success over the last five years.
Iraq, new focus for IT firms
Iraq is the next big market for regional IT companies. Many local players such as HP and Canon already have a strong presence. But a second wave of companies is also now preparing to tackle this difficult market. Singapore based e-Sys will announce its plans for Iraq at the Gitex computer show in Dubai early next month.
Oracle clear to buy PeopleSoft
A landmark legal decision in the US at the end of last week cleared the way for Oracle to complete its USD7.7bn hostile bid for rival PeopleSoft. Now the spotlight turns to the European Commission where outgoing Competition Commissioner Mario Monti is set to rule on the bid before he departs on November 1.
Nokia plans regional expansion
New offices in Iran and Pakistan will take the number of regional markets operated by Nokia from Dubai to 19. Vice President Dr. Walid Moneimne said the outlook in the region was promising in the near term with new licences in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.
HP launches mobile computers
HP has introduced an extended suite of HP iPAQ handheld devices and two new notebooks. The HP Compaq nx9020 and nx9030 Business Notebooks are designed for mobile professionals requiring wireless connectivity and long battery life for greater productivity, wherever their work takes them.
Home automation, Gitex theme
Home automation will be a key theme at the Gitex 2004 computer show in Dubai from October 3-7 with the stress on convergence devices that bring computer, audio and video products togther. This will encompass a vast range of digital home products displayed in a sample Hattan villa by Emaar subsidiary Sahm Technology.
eCompany, customised Net accounts
Etisalat business unit eCompany has announced the launch of the DialPlus Service that allows businesses as well as individuals to have multiple DialUP Internet access accounts and customized e-mail addresses based on their domain names, for example yourname@yourdomain.ae.
Adobe launches publishing suite
Adobe Systems Incorporated has launched the Middle East version of its award-winning Creative Suite Platform for the Design and Publishing Industry. The much awaited Middle East version will have Arabic language support. It combines enhanced versions of Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe InDesign CS.
IBM goes on the road
IBM Middle East will be hosting an all encompassing roadshow in the region next week. Intel, SAP Arabia, ACCPAC, S2 Systems, Stonesoft and IMAS Software will be joining IBM in hosting the first IBM Forum that will visit Kuwait, Doha and Dubai on September 14,15,16 respectively.
New FJC Pocket Loox PDA
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has unveiled the Pocket Loox 700 series, the latest in its handheld range, in the Middle East market. Tagged as a super-efficient mobile office that can be carried in the palm of the hand, the Pocket LOOX 710 and 720 offer high-performance mobile convenience to professional or private users. Trend Micro, Mideast virus alert
Big Three anti-virus company Trend Micro said there has been a dramatic increase in the number of computer viruses originating in the Middle East. Officials warned that the majority of viruses were Trojan viruses masquerading as one application and then moving to compromise the system.
Wireless focus for Gitex 2004
The region's largest computer show, Gitex 2004 which runs from October 3-7 in Dubai, will focus on the latest innovations in wireless technology this year. Mobility is the fastest growing area of the laptop market, with smart devices such as PDAs also now increasingly popular.
