Etisalat subsidiary e-marine has announced the successful completion of a submarine cable project that will serve as a prime enabler of Qatar's future growth in telecommunications and higher education. Shipments of computer systems and servers in the Gulf States are expected to grow an average of 16.3 per cent annually in volume through 2008. According to a new IDC study, market value will rise a more modest 7.8 per cent through 2008, as prices continue to fall. But IDC expects low-end volume servers to remain dominant in the price-sensitive markets of the Gulf.

Oman Telecommunications Company has launched a high-speed broadband Internet-service. ADSL, its super fast Internet service, based on a broadband xDSL network from Siemens, was launched at gala ceremony presided over by Oil Minister Dr Mohammed bin Hamad bin Saif Al Romhi at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel yesterday.
Saudi Arabia will overturn a ban on the import and sale of mobile camera phones, reported Al Eqtisadiah newspaper. But there will be new rules put in place to prevent the negative use of camera equipment in the phone, particularly the invasion of privacy of women, said sources.
Symantec, the security software maker, has announced a USD13.5bn deal to buy Veritas Software. The deal will allow Symantec to broaden its product line and cut costs, said CEO John Thompson. The merged group will have combined sales of USD5bn.
The British University in Dubai will host a free lecture today at 6pm on the future development of the Internet by Dr Henry S. Thompson from the University of Edinburgh. The lecture will particularly focus on the impact of the Internet on everyday lives.

Dubai's Tejari e-marketplace recorded 30,114 transactions in the year to September, and secured 2,960 trading partners. Since its launch in 2000 the e-marketplace has handled transactions worth more than USD1bn, said Chairman Sultan bin Sulayem.
