Gulf Air has signed an agreement with Oman-based Oracle business partner, MacroSoft for the implementation of Oracle's e-business suite in the airline's head office in Bahrain and outstations. The suite will cover finance, human resource management, supply chain management, customer relationship management, route profitability reporting and analysis.
The UAE should open up its telecom sector to more outside investment, head of Egypt's Orascom Telecom Naguib Sawris told the Arab Strategy Forum in Dubai yesterday. He said all countries in the Arab world could benefit from closer integration and that competition was a good thing.

Etisalat has launched a translation service for mobile phone users. They send a phrase in Arabic and receive a translation in English. This service is being offered in partnership with Sakhr Software operators of the www.ajeeb.com website, the online translation site.

Oracle has announced that PeopleSoft has accepted a higher bid of about USD10.3bn, ending a bitter 18-month takeover battle. Oracle said its offer to buy PeopleSoft for USD26.50 a share had been approved by both boards of directors. The previous offer was USD24 a share, and the deal should close by early January.

Etisalat customers will not have to pay rental charges for equipment from next month. Anyone currently renting equipment will be granted this equipment free of charge, said officials. They said the move was part of a move towards full liberalisation in the telecoms market.

Microsoft Chairman Emre Berkin told Gulf News that the software giant intends to press its rival Linux on the issue of consumer guarantees. He said Linux users need to question whether Linux can offer adequate technical support. Linux is being pushed heavily in the region by IBM, Sun and Oracle.

IBM and Integrated Technology Group of Jordan have announced that ITG's EduWave e-learning platform will run on the Linux operating system. IBM is to support EduWave as part of its open source e-learning solution platform for Middle East markets. EduWave, the comprehensive K-12 e-learning platform in Jordanian schools, has been deployed in over 3,000 schools in Jordan.
Acer Computer is extending the warranty on its LCD monitors to three years in Saudi Arabia. Acer, which has won Best Customer Support from the Windows Middle East magazine, has extended the warranty following positive feedback from consumers in Saudi Arabia.

KPMG and Knowledge Oasis Muscat have signed a deal to provide business mentor services to start-up companies resident in The Knowledge Mine, KOM's 3G business incubator. KPMG is a global accountancy and management consultancy practice with many clients in the sector.
Alhamrani Universal has ordered 10,000 Hypercom card payment terminals and PIN entry devices for Saudi Arabia's major banks. Hypercom EMEA VP Ted Satchell says the order is the company's largest yet. The technology will be rolled out at AU's clients, including National Commercial Bank, Arab National Bank, Riyadh Bank and The Saudi British Bank.
