HP to sell Virus Throttler
Hewlett-Packard engineers are set to strike against computer viruses and worms with the introduction of new Virus Throttler software next year. HP will roll-out the new product to corporate customers first for HP servers and may later add a version for home computer users.
UAE cuts call charges
Etisalat has announced that it has cut call charges for the National day weekend. For the period December 1, from 9pm, until 7am on December 5, all chargeable calls will cost no more than the cut-price off-peak rate.

UAE, online visa renewals
The e-Expat system goes live today in the UAE, opening the way to complete all visa formalities online, including residence visa applications, work permits, as well as labour and health cards. The Ministry of Finance said this was a crucial step toward a national system of e-government.

The Sharjah authorities have raided a pharmaceutical company and seized 10 PCs loaded with illegal software. This raid was part of our strategy to encourage home and office users to shun illegal software, said Arabian Anti-Piracy Alliance CEO Scott Butler.
GCC e-commerce USD1bn by 2008
B2C e-commerce is set to boom in the GCC, crossing the USD1bn by the year 2008, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE leading the table. More than one-third will be online bookings for airlines and hotels, followed by books, clothing, gifts, flowers, electronic products including music CDs and DVDs, computer software and hardware, according to a report by Dubai-based Madar Research Group.
New UAE travel portal
eCompany, Etisalat's one-stop e-business unit, has entered into an agreement with myTravelChannel.com, an Emirates Group subsidiary to offer a range of online travel services through its bilingual portal travel.albahhar.ae. The new travel channel went live today.
UAE Net service back online
UAE Internet services have been fully restored following a technical problem on Tuesday last week which slowed connections. Thousands of people experienced snail-paced connections which were finally eliminated by Friday. Internet cafes reported a 70 per cent slowdown in connection speeds.

UAE Net for free promotion
Etisalat has announced that it will waive the cost of registration for its dial-up Internet service until December 27. This standard Internet connection usually costs USD27 in the UAE. The campaign is designed to boost Internet penetration rates in the UAE.

Sun, Oracle, Solaris link-up
Sun Microsystems and Oracle have announced that Oracle 10g is now supported on Sun's Solaris 10 Operating System for Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron and SPARC processor-based architectures. In addition, the companies are announcing general availability of Oracle Database 10g for Solaris systems.
Etisalat, focus on new markets
Etisalat's board meeting yesterday chalked out a new four-year expansion strategy focused on new markets, with entry into Sudan and Saudi Arabia merely the start, according to Chairman Dr Mohammed Khalfan bin Kharbash. He said financial performance had soared in the first nine months of 2004.
