Bahrain is to begin trials of a national ID smart card next year for introduction towards the end of 2005. This will include personal data including bank records, driving licence, passport details, health records and fingerprints, said officials.
Oman Telecommunications is to introduce an electronic collection system for bills next year. This follows the signing yesterday of an agreement with Oman Arab Bank and the Oman National Electricity Company which paves the way for the new Omantel system.
The piracy rate for software in the UAE has fallen to 34 per cent, the lowest in the region, according to the Business Software Alliance. The news came after a raid in Sharjah on a training centre by the Sharjah Police which yielded 70 PCs uploaded with pirated software.

Two men who allegedly rang up a total of USD1.5m in free phone calls through Etisalat have been arrested in Dubai, reported Gulf News. Police mounted a surveillance operation last September, and found them using equipment to link local phone lines to an ADSL phone line to make international calls.

He said the company had already launched in Europe and would open in the US before the end of the year. In three years of operation i-mate has doubled unit production every six months.
