Etisalat has asked customers to ignore fraudulent emails that claim that SIM cards can be accessed to make callers at the subscriber's expense. Officials said the claims were groundless, and that these emails should not be forwarded to friends causing needless alarm.

The Dubai Shopping Festival and Dubai Summer Surprises are the latest recruits to the online marketplace Tejari.com. The organisers will use Tejari.com to centralise and streamline its purchasing processes. Tejari was set-up by the now UAE Economy Minister Sheikh Lubna Al Qasimi.

Computer Associates has released two of its Protection suites in the Middle East and Pakistan. The six fully integrated solution suites use a common Web-based management console and an intuitive desktop dashboard to help SMBs reduce risks, system downtime and IT management costs.
Jordan is a leading the Middle East in telecoms market liberalisation, with 29 licences issued by the state regulator since Jordan Telecom lost its monopoly in January 2005 with the arrival of Batelco. But household fixed-line penetration is poor, mainly due to the migration to mobile services. Mobile penetration reached more than 37% by the end of June 2005, following the arrival of the country's third and fourth mobile operators XPress and Umniah.
Dubai Municipality's e-service for medical certificates is proving the most popular of the 350-plus services offered through its e-Government portal, reported WAM. The system has clocked up over 307,000 applications out of a total of 1,357,066 transactions for all government services since opening in October 2001.

Jarir Bookstores and mobile distributor Source IT are sponsoring a road show in Saudi to promote the latest devices by i-mate. The tour runs until 28 October and will include the demonstration of devices, including the recently introduced i-mate Jasjar and i-mate K-Jam, at Jarir stores in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.
Bahrain residents will be able to renew driving licences, register cars, and pay traffic fines over the internet by the end of 2005. The move is part of a government drive to streamline and speed up the delivery of administrative services.
Etisalat says contributions to the Dubai - the City that Cares 2005 campaign can be made by sending an SMS to 4711. Each message will result in an automatic donation of Dhs10 to such charitable associations as the UAE Red Crescent, UN World Food Program, Dubai Charity Association and Al Nour Centre for training and rehabilitation of children with special needs.

Connexion by Boeing has demonstrated its in-flight mobile telephony systems during a week of demonstration flights in Europe. Passengers used the system to make mobile calls using a broadband satellite link, and tested the high-speed Internet service. UTStarcom supplied its MovingMedia 2000 all-IP mobile network infrastructure equipment to Connexion for the system.
Batelco has signed a roaming agreement with Uzbekistan-based telco Uzdunrobita which will allow Batelco mobile users to make and receive calls while in Uzbekistan. Batelco's mobile customers will be automatically connected to the Uzbekistan-based service, which operates a GSM 900/1800, on arrival.
Building upon the success it has achieved in the Saudi commercial sector, Acer has announced the appointment of a new channel partner, Global Distribution Company to distribute the company's commercial desktops, servers and monitors in the Kingdom. Etisalat has launched a campaign to persuade subscribers to its pre-paid SIM cards to switch to post-paid. Subscribers can keep their old number and eliminate the need to keep recharging their pre-paid account. There is also a free card to allow local calls to be charged to the mobile account.

OnLine Distribution and CipherTrust have introduced Cipher's IronMail e-mail security system, which is said to be one of the most advanced in the world, into the Middle East. Demand for higher levels of e-mail security in medium and large enterprises has risen following a wave of "phishing" attacks designed to steal personal data and hack into files.
HP has signed a five-year contract with the Emirates Group to deploy an IT and business services management solution. The HP OpenView solution will be implemented to manage the Group's complete IT infrastructure to increase IT performance and reduce costs.
