Google, Sun Microsystems pact

Google and Sun Microsystems have agreed on software collaboration in an apparent strategy to challenge Microsoft's dominance in computer word processing and spreadsheets. Under the agreement, Google could offer programs that would compete with Microsoft's leading Office suite, and its toolbar will be offered as part of the Java Runtime Engine.

Gulf Air buys with Tejari

Gulf Air has linked with Dubai-based Tejari to buy goods and services online, as part of the airline's strategy to keep costs down. President James Hogan said the conventional tendering process was not proving cost-effective, and indicated the airline had made savings since joining the Tejari marketplace.

Emaar enters telecoms business

Dubai-based property developer Emaar has applied for prequalification in a bid for Telsim, Turkey's second largest mobile phone operator, reported Gulf News. Etisalat has also submitted an application. Other companies that have applied include Vodafone, France Telecom, Orascom, and Mobile Telecommunication Corp.

Etisalat off-peak Ramadan rates

Etisalat is charging off-peak rates for international calls for the first three days of the holy month of Ramadan, according to a company statement. The offer applies to both mobile and fixed line services. For more information, visit www.etisalat.ae.

Acer joins PDA market

Acer has entered the Personal Digital Assistant market with two PDA models. The Acer n35 Enhanced Navigator model is a slim and compact PDA with an integrated Global Positioning System satellite navigation system, and also comes with in-built multimedia and Personal Information Management functions. The Acer n50 and n50 Premium series are high-performance PDAs, which come integrated with Microsoft Windows Mobile, as well as the latest infrared, wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies.

Nokia calls for 3G investment

Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila told journalists in Dubai that the Middle East would account for 20% of the one billion more mobile phone subscribers expected by 2010. But he warned that regional telcos needed to invest more in 3G technology to offer packages that are differentiated.

Gitex visitors up 9.8%

The Silver Jubilee edition of Gitex lived up to its international reputation as one of the leading IT exhibitions in the world by attracting a record number of trade visitors from across the globe. The event, which attracted 127,724 trade visitors, registered a 9.8% increase over the previous edition announced organisers Dubai World Trade Centre.

Gitex Shopper sales up 36%

The 15th Gitex Shopper consumer IT show reported a 36% surge in sales to $21m last week. Some 117,994 people visited the show, up 9% on the previous year. Flat screen TVs, digital convergence products and home theatres were top selling items.

$479m in mobiles to Jordan

Mobile shipments to Jordan will reach 1.5m by the end of 2005, including units for re-export, according to BIS Shrapnel. It predicts mobile uptake rate will continue to increase to the end of 2008, when the number of subscribers will reach 4.5m and the value of shipped handsets will be $479m. Jordan is a popular re-export centre for mobiles to Syria, Palestine and Iraq, since the abolition of an import tax in 2003.

MTC-Vodafone, Binser platform

Kuwait-based MTC-Vodafone is planning to buy Bahrain-based Binser's SMS-MMS delivery platform, and offer the service throughout the region following its debut in Bahrain. The software will enable MTC to offer a comprehensive range of PC and web-based SMS-MMS solutions.

IBM, $4.87m DM deal

IBM has won a $4.87m contract with Dubai Municipality to develop next generation online services, which is part of the municipality's strategy to modernise its e-services capacity. DM plans to make 90% of its services e-enabled by 2007.

Samsung wants 50% ME LCD

Samsung aims to have 50% market share of the Middle East LCD monitor market by 2006. The company introduced upgraded Magic-series monitors at GITEX, which range from 15 to 46 inch screens. The monitors accommodate all computer display requirements.

Hyundai Mobile enters DIC

Hyundai Mobile has opened its new headquarters at Dubai Internet City, after registering at the free zone in October 2004. Hyundai says Dubai's location will help its ambitious expansion plans into markets such Iran, South Africa, Turkey and Kazakhstan. The company will also open offices in North and South America in 2006.

Fujitsu Siemens UAE HCT deal

Fujitsu Siemens has won a multimillion contract to supply Abu Dhabi Men's College with 648 tablet PCs. The lightweight, convertible T4010 laptops will be used by first year entrants as part of the UAE government's e-learning strategy. IT training is planned to make sure students get the most from their notebooks.
