Fujitsu Siemens has introduced what it claims is the world's lightest convertible notebook, the Lifebook P1510. It weighs less than 1kg, yet delivers full notebook and tablet PC functionality. It is aimed particularly at vertical markets such as healthcare and insurance.

The Dubai International Financial Exchange has chosen EastNets to implement SWIFT solutions through EastNets service bureau. The solution will give DIFX a single-window access to a large network of banks and ensure secure transactions, and connect brokers, counter-parties, customers and banks via the SWIFT IP network.

The UAE's telecom sector will be closed to competition until at least 2015, with consumers stuck with a choice between services from two government owned operators, reported Gulf News. Licencing of a second telecom operator is currently in progress, without competitive bidding, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority director-general Mohammad N Al Ghannim told the daily.

Palm is demonstrating push email on its Treo 650 smart phones, in partnership with Dexterra Mobile Groupware at Gitex 2005. The Mobility Groupware solution pushes email directly to a device, without the user having to manually connect and check.
LG has unveiled what it claims is the world's first mobile phone that can receive terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting. It allows users to watch terrestrial DMB TV and speak simultaneously via mobile phone. LG invested $20bn to develop the phone, filing 150 patent applications.
Etisalat has selected Nokia to supply its push-to-talk communications solution, the first such service in the UAE. Push-to-talk over cellular, or PoC, allows customers to use their phones like walkie talkies, communicating with one or more pre-selected users at the push of a button. Around 50% of Nokia's handsets currently on the market are push-enabled.

Qatar Telecom is partnering with Cisco Systems to formulate an integrated IP strategy to support the development of Qatar's high speed e-infrastructure. Under the agreement Qtel will adopt converged IP infrastructure to support major broadband clients such as the Qatar Foundation, Doha Asian Games and the Doha International Airport expansion project.
Acer says its latest server, the Acer Altos G5350 based on AMD Opteron technology, is the first dual-core platform designed specifically for the SMB market. Acer expects massive growth in the regional SMB segment, as more than 50% of Middle East business is comprised of SMBs.
IBM, Intel and Symbol Technologies have agreed on a joint initiative to help companies extend e-business infrastructure and drive the adoption of wireless solutions in the Middle East. The solutions will integrate the Intel Centrino mobile technology and Symbol's wireless handheld devices with IBM software, hardware and services.
UAE telco Etisalat is showcasing an IP-based virtual private network telecommunications system that will allow a company to make free calls between its different offices. The system is based on multi-protocol label switching and is available in different packages. All types of communication including voice, video and data are included.

LG Electronics has become the world's largest plasma display producer, manufacturing 350,000 PDPs a month. The company aims to be the market leader with 30 percent market share in PDP modules by 2005, and the leading manufacturer of PDP television sets with 20 percent market share by 2006.
Seventy percent of SMBs plan to increase IT spending in 2006, according to a survey by HP. Priority areas include basic IT infrastructure (74%), followed by packaged software (57%), data communication (28%) and external IT services (17%). Although 76% of respondents claim to consider return on investment in IT purchasing, only 22 percent work out the total cost of ownership before buying.
