Etisalat to hook up with Leban

Etisalat is in line to partner Lebanon's new state-owned teleco, Leban Telecom, when it begins operations in the next three months. Leban will offer a 40% partnership stake to local or foreign telecom operators and privatise the remaining 60% through an initial public offering in two years, Lebanon's Minister for Telecommunications told Gulf News.

HCT chooses CA solutions

The UAE Higher Colleges of Technology has chosen Computer Associates' eTrust Secure Content Management and eTrust PestPatrol security solutions to protect 15,000 users across its 13 campuses in the UAE. The deployment makes HCT the largest user site of CA eTrust security solutions in the Arab world.

ICT cooperation agreement

The Arab Business Forum for Information and Communication Technology and the Arab Internet Forum have agreed to cooperate in research and development, and support regional projects that will advance Arab progression in the ICT sector. An agreement was signed on the sidelines of the third annual Abfict conference in Dubai.

LG mini notebooks

LG Electronics is introducing two mini notebooks from its Express series at GITEX 2005. The LW20 features a 12.1 inch screen and 3D sound card, and the LW40 Express has a 14 inch screen and five-in-one memory card reader. Both notebooks feature Intel wireless connectivity and Pentium M processors.

Apple hits Gitex with everything

Computer Associates is demonstrating its Virtual Enterprise at GITEX 2005, in a real-world simulation of an enterprise IT environment. It includes seven departments from IT to customer service, and will show how CA technology can simplify and automate data management. CA works with 98% of Global 1000 companies.

Etisalat goes roaming in HK

Etisalat has signed a roaming agreement with Hong Kong-based Smart Tone for customers of Mubashir, its 3G mobile package. Under the arrangement Etisalat and Smart Tone users can roam in each others' networks and use all 3G features, including video calling and conferencing. Etisalat plans to sign 10 more agreements with international telcos by the end of 2005.

Record Gitex exhibitors

Organisers of Gitex 2005 say they have registered up to 2,724 exhibitors, an increase of 12% over last year. The number of national pavilions has gone up from 21 to 24, and the overall area being used has increased by 10% to 302,270 sqft. The international ICT event runs from 25-29 September.

Toshiba, ultra light and portable

Toshiba has brought the Libretto U100 ultra portable mini notebook to the Middle East. The computer weighs less than one kilogram, has a TruBrite 7.2-inch LCD screen with LED backlight, and comes with a four-hour battery life.

Mobile phone payments soon

Etisalat's eCompany is developing MPayment, a solution through which mobile phones are used for payment of a range of goods and services. The company is negotiating with leading UAE banks and service providers to give the system a wide scope. The service will be available from early 2006.

Kiwis set up at DIC

Four of New Zealand's leading technology companies have signed up to New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's New Zealand Technology Oasis, which has started operations from Dubai Internet City. The companies - Argent Networks, 4RF Communications, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Mercer Technologies - say their presence will make it easier to do business in the fast growing Middle East region.

JCCI authentication online

The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry demonstrated its electronic authentication transaction system yesterday. The service allows chamber members to sign government applications and have them authenticated over the Internet.
