Dubai Silicon Oasis has signed a deal with France-based CMP that will see the company fabricate and package chip designs out of the technology park for research laboratories and educational facilities. CMP focuses on brokering integrated circuits and micro electro-mechanical systems.

LG Electronics says it will show the world's largest PDP and LCD TVs, new notebook PCs, and a multimedia broadcast receiving mobile phone at Gitex 2005. The 71-inch PDP TV has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and is embedded with a picture enhancing XD Engine. LG aims to be the world market leader with a 30% market share in PDP modules by the end of 2005, and the leading manufacturer of PDP TV sets with a 20% share by 2006.

MDS says it was the UAE's best performed IT service provider in 2004 according to research by IDC, taking an 11.8% share of the $308.5m market for IT support, training and education, system integration, outsourcing and software installation. IDC also said the whole market grew by 12.7% during 2004.

Notebooks are expected to outsell desktop PCs at Gitex Shopper 2005, according to organisers Dubai World Trade Centre. A report by IDC says shipments of notebooks to the MEA region increased by 108% and desktops by 23.5%, in Q2 2005. Notebooks make up close to 50% of total PC shipments into Saudi and already outsell desktops in the UAE.

Investcom, the international mobile telecoms company that is to list on the Dubai International Financial Exchange, today announced that it has been awarded one of two new licenses to operate GSM services in Afghanistan.
