Sun breathes Sun Fire

Sun Microsystems has previewed the Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers in the Middle East featuring its CoolThreads technology that packs a rack of servers onto a single chip. Based on the 9.6 GHz UltraSPARC T1 processor, Sun says the new server has as little as half the power, cooling and space costs of other microprocessors on the market.

HP tops ME computer sales

HP has taken top spot for sales of desktop and notebook computers in the Middle East, with a 15.4% total market share, more than 4% clear of its nearest competitor, according to IDC figures for Q3 2005. HP's sales of desktops grew 58.1% and notebooks 63% for the quarter, compared to the corresponding period last year.

STC broadband expansion

Saudi Telecom is partnering with Alcatel, Cisco Systems and Lucent Technologies to create an advanced broadband network in the Kingdom. The network will enable STC to provide an extra 250,000 DSL lines by mid 2006, covering 75% of Saudi Arabia.

MTC, Madagascar bid

Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications is in talks to buy a majority stake in a mobile phone services provider in Madagascar, according to a company statement. The local telco was not named, but Al Qabas newspaper reported that the firm had 250,000 subscribers. It said MTC was also looking at telecoms in other African nations such as Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria and Egypt.

Italy, UAE love mobile phones

The UAE tied with Italy as highest in a Motorola survey of eight countries of mobile phone use: 87% of the 500 respondents wanted their mobile phone with them at all times, which compared to just 27% of people in the UK with most of the population keeping their phone switched off.

Net use highest in the UAE

The UAE topped a survey of Internet use carried out by Motorola in eight countries, with 72% of 500 UAE respondents claiming to be Net connected, of which 89% said they could not live without the Internet. Other countries in the survey were: France, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa, Spain and the UK.

UAE, Pakistan cable link

Emirates Telecommunications & Marine Services has finished laying a submarine cable connecting the UAE and Pakistan, with a section to Oman. The 1200-km cable will boost the Internet bandwidth between the countries.

Alcatel, $23m Saudi DSL deal

Alcatel has won a $23.5m contract with Saudi Telecom to implement DSL services in the Kingdom. Alcatel will supply its ISAM product which will increase access to high speed internet, including the ability to connect to triple play services through IP DSLAM.

Etisalat, new pre-paid card

Etisalat has launched a new Dhs20 pre-paid blue card for paying international phone calls, pre-paid Internet, I-Zone and E-Vision pay-per-view movies. The card works for all services except a Wasel GSM mobile card recharge for which red and green cards are available.

Bayt.com, 1m job seekers

Dubai based jobs website Bayt.com has enrolled almost 1m people, but now has 500 candidates for every job, reported Gulf News. Its database showed that 38% of Saudi national apply for jobs abroad with 32% of these people applying for jobs in Dubai.

HP eliminates Compaq name

Once a big name in the region, the Compaq brand is to disappear with the absorption of Compaq Services Saudi Arabia into HP under the new title, Hewlett-Packard Services Saudi Arabia, MD Joseph Hanania told Gulf News. But he said this was just a sign of HP's strong commitment to the Kingdom where the US giant has an assembly plant.

Etisalat offers holiday rates

Etisalat has announced that all peak rate international phone calls made during the period from 9pm on Thursday December 1 until 7am on Monday December 5 will be charged at off-peak rates. This will mark the occasion of the UAE National Day holiday.

ANB, $40m Infosys order

The Arab National Bank has placed an order worth up to $40m with Indian software giant Infosys to implement its Finacle core banking solution. The project will be rolled out across 115 branches in Saudi Arabia by 2008, and brings the number of banks using this system in the region to nine.
