Axiom Telecom has opened its first cafe store where customers can enjoy a cup of their favorite beverage while shopping for a mobile phone, reported Gulf News. Axiom is the largest retailer of phones in the Middle East with more than 200 outlets, and plans to have 600 by the end of the year.

Authorities in Lebanon yesterday confirmed in a public statement that there are now plans to implement much delayed measures to offer faster and less expensive Broadband internet access across the country, reported the Arab Press Digest. DSL services at prices comparable to Europe should become available in March or April, said the statement.
Internet Service Providers, regulators and government representatives from the GCC will discuss local IP networking at a meeting in Doha from January 17-18. It will be hosted by Qatar's Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology, with Carnegie Mellon Qatar Campus and the Qatar Foundation and sponsored by Qtel.
OmanMobile is now providing weather forecasts in association with the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation and Meteorology in English and Arabic. The service works through WAP or SMS. Subscribers should SMS number 90023 and type f. before the name of the preferred province, such as f.muscat.
The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority has outsourced its IT to the Abu Dhabi based start up Injazat in a 10 year deal. Officials would not disclose the amount involved but told Gulf News it was 'significantly huge'. Around 150 Adwea staff will be transferred to Injazat.

LG Electronics has introduced its satellite DMB phone, the SB-120. The phone has an in-built standard home TV antenna function that adopts the DMB-receiving system-on-chip, which allows TV watching, via a rotating LCD screen, and talking simultaneously. The phone also delivers 3D quality stereo sound.
Egypt-based Orascom Telecom said it had more than 30m subscribers to its services at the end of 2005, more than double that for 2004, reported Reuters. OT said in a statement that the growth had come from its networks operating in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.
Batelco has selected Ericsson to upgrade its GSM networks, which will increase coverage and capacity for both voice and data services. The upgrade will allow for the launch of new mobile services, such as video streaming and high speed data services.
Etisalat's eCompany is offering a 30% discount on its shared web hosting service for government and non profit organisations. The offer is open to both new and existing customers through six packages, from the Myweb which can host more than 1000 pages, to the Ultra package at the high end.

Etisalat and Ras al Khaimah authorities have uncovered a racket in some local cafes and restaurants where high-tech machines were being used to make cheap long distance phone calls through the Internet, for as little as Dh1 a call, reported Gulf News. Police arrested alleged members of an Asian gang, who were using the illegal hardware which was brought in from outside the UAE.
