Research In Motion and Cisco Systems are teaming up to let enterprises integrate their BlackBerrys with Cisco IP phones, providing single-number capability amongst other features. By bringing together their BlackBerry and Cisco infrastructures, enterprises can make users reachable with one number, one caller ID and one voicemail box for both their mobile and desk phones.
Vodafone Qatar QSC has raised QR3.38bn ($928m) in its initial public offering, when 82,000 Qatari nationals subscribed to 65% of the shares and 273 institutional investors bought the remaining 35%. The company said that allocation of the shares will be completed on or before May 10, while listing the shares on the Doha Securities Market is expected by the end of July.
Mobile handsets have suffered their fastest ever fall in annual sales dropping 13% to 245 million units, compared to 282 million units for the same period last year. Market research firm Strategy Analytics said the fall was due to changing consumer habits and retailers not holding inventory.
Vodafone Qatar's QR3.38bn initial public offering (IPO) had been fully subscribed, the company has announced in a statement. Vodafone Qatar sold 40% stake, in a total of 338.1 million shares for QR10 each. Allocation of shares will be finalized on or before 10 May 2009 and shareholders will be advised of their subscriptions by SMS during this period.
Egypt's Mobinil has posted a 6% fall in net income for the first quarter of 2009, to LE424m ($75m). However, net revenues rose 10% year on year to LE2.49m. Subscriber numbers rose by 31% to 21.179 million.
UAE-based telecom provider Du said it posted a net profit of Dhs47m ($12.80m) in the first quarter from a Dhs62m loss in the year-earlier period. Du was well positioned to 'prosper throught 2009 and 2010' the company said in its statement on the Dubai bourse website. The company reported total revenues for the quarter of Dhs1.166bn, up 54% in the same period of 2008.

Tareq Al-Kandari, Board Chairman of Kuwait's Hayat Communications, said the company plans to launch a subsidiary in Bahrain with a capital of KD100,000, 70% of which will be owned by the company, while Bahraini partners will own the remaining percentage. The new subsidiary will focus on building the infrastructure of information technology and providing integrated services to the rapidly-growing telecommunication sector in the kingdom, he said.
Samsung Electronics says it has become the first company among the global top three mobile phone manufacturers to unveil an Android-powered phone. The company's newly launched, Android-powered I7500 smartphone features a 3.2-inch active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (Amoled) full touch screen. It also includes a 7.2 Mbps high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), WiFi connectivity, a 5-megapixel camera and an integrated GPS receiver providing access to Google's online services.
John Tombelson, CFO of Vodafone Qatar, told Reuters that the company expects its initial public offering to be fully subscribed. The offering, which is open only to Qatari firms and individuals, aimed to raise 3.38 billion riyals ($929.1m) by selling a 40% stake.
UAE regulatory authorities have accused Etisalat of deliberately delaying the introduction of a system that allows consumers to switch carriers to get cheaper rates when they make phone calls, reported the National. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said in a statement Etisalat was yet to implement carrier pre-selection, which allows competition in the broadband internet and landline telephone markets. The UAE government mandated the system last year, but Etisalat has stalled its introduction, the newspaper said.

Dr Shabib Ammari, Jordan Telecom's chairman of the board, has announced that JTC's revenue in 2008 was a record JD401.4m, compared with JD397.9m in 2007, while net profit rose by 6.1% to JD100.3m in 2008.
Saudi-based STC has reduced the cost of international roaming calls by 50% in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The initiative, to mark the launch of its unified international roaming service, makes use of strategic partnerships with mobile services providers in those areas.
Du has signed up an agreement with Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) giving Du the uninterrupted access to all installed and planned fibre optics networks across Abu Dhabi. Du will utilise Adwea-owned Transco's state-of-the-art fibre optics network offering unlimited access to the current dark fibre network intended to increase Du's capacity in internet bandwidth.

Saudi Arabia's Mobily has launched a new prepaid package featuring services tailored for users with special needs to communicate easily through video and SMS only. Sold for SR75, the package contains SR75 in credit, plus 60 free video minutes a month and 60 free SMS monthly to other Mobily lines. No voice calling minutes are included in the package.
Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said its profit rose 15% in the first-quarter of this year to QR604.4 million ($166m) from QR525.4 million a year earlier. The company said the number of Qtel's customers increased to 55.9 million from 16.8 million a year earlier, boosting revenue 58% to QR5.6 billion.
