More than 250 government representatives from across the Mena region will attend the Government Leaders Forum Arabia 2008 which begins today, Sunday. Bill Gates will be the keynote speaker at the forum, to be held today and tomorrow at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. This is the first time the Microsoft chief is visiting the UAE. Every Arab country will be represented at the event, as government officials explore the most effective ways of building capacity through education and training, and also modernising government departments with the latest technologies.

Dubai-based global IT provider Satyam Computer Services has announced that it has achieved over 100% growth in its year-on-year revenues and over 20% growth in its quarter-on-quarter numbers from the Middle East region for the third quarter of its fiscal year 2007-2008. This is the highest increase the company has seen in its 12 years in the region. The company also revealed that its regional operations have generated 11% of its rest of world earnings.

Etisalat has the highest brand recognition in the UAE among telecom operators, according to a regional mobile syndicated study conducted by Maktoob Research, the online research unit of Maktoob.com. The report said etisalat, with 79%, has the highest brand recognition in the UAE, followed by du with 60%. Meanwhile, Jordan's Umniah with 77%, Egypt's Vodafone with 76%, Saudi Arabia's Mobily with 73% and UAE's etisalat with 52% were the highest scorers in overall customer satisfaction in their own countries, reported Guld News.

Cellucom, one of the leading retailer for mobility products, has confirmed opening of 16 new stores across the UAE as part of its expansion strategy, reported Gulf News. The expansion is targeted to tap the growing market for mobility products and accessories. The new stores are part of Cellucom's retail expansion and consolidation plan in the region. The additional stores bring the total number of Cellucom retail locations in UAE to 40.

Chairman and chief executive officer John Chambers met with Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned to announce the company would establish a research and technology base at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). Cisco is planning to invest approximately $40m in its development at QSTP over the next three years. As part of this plan, Cisco will collaborate with Qatar Foundation on a series of projects to help enable QSTP's vision of transforming Qatar into a knowledge-based economy and facilitating youth employment across the country.
US-based networking and communications technology giant Cisco has announced that it will invest over Dhs5.8bn ($1.6bn) to develop information and communication technology in the UAE over the next five years, reported Gulf News. The company will build Cisco's Global Centre for Connected Real Estate, where it will highlight what it has learned about networking homes, businesses and other types of real estate in Dubai. It will also expand the number of Cisco Networking Academies currently in the UAE by 20, bring the number to 59.

Saudi Telecom, the Arab world's largest phone company, said quarterly profit rose for the first time in six quarters, reported Bloomberg. Fourth-quarter net income rose 9.3% to 3.05bn riyals ($813.4m) from 2.79bn riyals in the year- earlier period. The company gave no explanation for the rise.
Saudi Telecom, the largest Arab telecom firm by market value, has acquired a 35% of Oger Telecom for $2.6bn, reported Reuters. The deal will give the telecom giant access to markets from Turkey to South Africa. Dubai-based Oger was in talks to sell a stake to French telecom group Vivendi after scrapping a public share sale, but the talks ended without a deal in November.
Cisco and Madinah Knowledge Economic City in Saudi Arabia have confirmed a strategic agreement for the development of five-million-square-meter 'smart city'. The project is designed to attract global information and communications technology firms who wish to establish operations and research-and-development facilities in Saudi. Knowledge Economic City's investment in the project is approximately $8bn.
A new study by research firm Rnocs has found that the the value of the UAE's information and communications technology industry is expected to reach $2.4bn by 2011, up from $1.5bn in 2006, reported Gulf News. In terms of the fastest growing IT markets in the Middle East, Qatar is on top with 145% expected growth (during 2007-2011), followed by Kuwait with 17% (2006-2011) and Turkey with 16% (2007-2011) growth.

The launch of Etisalat in Egypt in the second quarter of 2007 was much anticipated. At first glance, the addition of a third player appears to have energised the market, with net additions topping 3 million for the first time ever in Q2, and Q3 setting a new record of 3.73 million, reported Cellular News. The size of the total market stood at 26.9m at the end of September 2007, up from 15.87m a year earlier - a growth rate of 70 per cent.
