Gulf's laptop market rising 60% per year
- The Gulf's notebook market is growing 60% year-on-year, according to Santosh Varghese, regional general manager for Toshiba's Computer Systems Division growth. He said Toshiba owns 18% of the local market and expects to sell more than 500,000 notebooks in the Gulf this year compared to 400,000 units last year.

Russia's MegaFon eyes Iran
- MegaFon, Russia's third-largest mobile phone operator, is seeking to invest about $4.64bn to build a GSM network in Iran, reported Bloomberg. The auction of a third GSM licence in Iran is expected this year but the tender has not been announced yet. There are currently two mobile service providers in Iran - state-controlled Iran Telecommunication Company and MTN Group, sub-Saharan Africa's biggest cellphone operator.

Batelco to invest $1bn in Saudi
- Batelco (Bahrain Telecommunications Company) plans to invest $1bn in the Saudi market as part of a strategy to raise revenue by boosting its overseas operations, reported Arab News. The company is also seeking permission for an IPO and intends to list 25% of its shares on the Saudi bourse, Peter Kaliaropoulos, CEO of Batelco, said during the company's quarterly media briefing.

UAE's IT market hits $2bn in 2007
- The size of the UAE's information technology and communications market amounted to $2bn in 2007, an increase of 10.1%, a government official said on Thursday. Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, said the UAE's IT sector is the fastest growing in the world, and will continue to increase at the same rate until 2010, when it will reach $2.5bn, reported Gulf News.

Six bids for Bahrain's 3rd MNO
- Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority received a total of 7 responses, 6 of which will compete to become the third mobile network operator (MNO) in Bahrain, reported Bahrain Tribune. Bahrain's penetration rate for mobile services has almost hit 110% of the population, as some people own more than one mobile handset.

Qtel, ATCO launch wi-tribe
- Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and Saudi Arabia's A.A. Turki Corporate Trading and Construction (ATCO) have partnered to offer wi-tribe limited. Through WiMAX technology, wi-tribe will provide broadband internet access through a portable wireless modem that simply plugs into the customer's computer without the need for a fixed telephone line.

Satyam over 100% growth in ME
- India's software services exporter Satyam Computer Service announced it has record more than 100% growth from its Middle East operations, reported Gulf News. Revenues reached $28m in fiscal year ending March 2008. Growth doubled in Kuwait and Bahrain. Satyam serves about 160 customers in the region.

du joins Europe-India cable deal
- du said it has signed a construction and maintenance agreement for the Europe India Gateway cable system, costing more than $700m. The agreement seeks to build the first direct, high-bandwidth optical-fiber submarine cable system from the United Kingdom to India.
