  • Thuraya inks 10 distribution deals

  • UAE-based Thuraya has signed 10 distribution agreements for its newly launched product ThurayaMarine. The 10 agreements signed recently were with Fort Info Technology, GPTC, IEC, Intermatica, Moodotel, Nera Telecommunications, Satcom, Satlink, WorldCom Japan Traders and Xtralink. The SPs will be marketing and promoting ThurayaMarine service throughout Thuraya's extensive coverage area.

  • Mobily gets 'buy' recommendation from BMG

  • Saudi Arabian mobile operator Mobily has been given a 'buy' recommendation in a report by BMG Financial Advisors, reported Khaleej Times. The report set a target value per share of SR70.74 compared to the current market price of SR55.25 for Mobily shares.

  • Etisalat, Microsoft sign partnership deal

  • Etisalat and Microsoft Corporation have signed an agreement to engage in joint efforts to market and sell their products and services in the Middle East. Under the deal both companies will also collaborate on emerging technologies to create solutions for customers by sharing and reviewing their respective emerging technologies and product roadmaps, according to a statement.This collaboration will develop targeted solutions in several identified areas such as On-Premise and Off-Premise Unified Communications, Mobility, Hosted Business Applications & IPTV (TV over Broadband) in addition to many others.

  • Kuwait aims to curb piracy

  • The Kuwait Ministry of Commerce and Industry has signed an agreement with the Business Software Alliance, the international association that promotes a safe and legal digital world. The initiative will include an extensive advertising and media campaign togenerate awareness regarding existing anti-piracy programs and the benefits of curtailing this practice. The piracy rate in the country is estimated to be 62%.

  • Zain Iraq buys Iraqna for $1.2bn

  • Orascom Telecom is selling Iraqna to Zain Iraq in a $1.2bn deal. The National Bank of Kuwait announced it is the sole arranger for the deal, where Zain Iraq would pay for the deal in two tranches of $600m each in 2008 and the other in 2009. Iraqna is a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom.

  • wi-tribe hits Jordan

  • Qtel Group's broadband Internet subsidiary, wi-tribe is now providing its first wireless broadband service in Jordan, using the WiMAX technology. wi-tribe was founded by Qtel and A A Turki Corporate Trading and Construction (ATCO) of Saudi Arabia.

  • Mena Telecom opens WiMAX

  • Mena Telecom has opened its main WiMAX network site in Bahrain's Seef area, the Bahrain Tribune has reported. This effort will enable Mena Telecom to launch its new nationwide network for its WiMAX range of products and services. The WiMAX experience offers broadband speeds while on the move, without getting disconnected.

  • Qtel offers SMS translation

  • Qtel has launched a new service called Tarjim, an SMS-based translation service which enables customers to translate words and short phrases from English into Arabic and vice versa, reported The Peninsula. Customers have to send an SMS with an English or Arabic word or phrase to 2422 and they will receive the translation via SMS.
