Al Yah seeks $1.2bn for expansion
- The UAE's first nationally owned satellite operator, Al Yah Satellite Communications Company, is seeking $1.2bn in funding to finance its satellites communications systems, reported Gulf News. Officials said the 14-year non-recourse finance will raise $1bn in term loan, $100m in stand-by term loans and $85m in debt service reserve letter of credit. The company intends to close the deal by August 2008.

Batelco issues spam warning
- Batelco has issued a warning about spam SMS promising readers free credit. The messages purport to come from the Bahrain-based company to celebrate 50 years of wireless service and promise subscribers BD5 of talk time if the message is forwarded to 10 other numbers.

'Hacktivism' on the rise
- Internet users in the Middle East are being urged to take precautions against a new kind of cybercrime - Hacktivism - which is on the rise. A combination of 'hacking' and 'activism', hacktivism is the act of hacking into a URL or IT system in order to communicate a politically or socially motivated message. Trend Micro, an internet security firm, says global political and social events, such as the Beijing Olympics, are leading to an increasing volume of Hacktivism attacks originating within the region, as well as penetrating local networks from external sources.

Acer partners with Optimiza in Saudi
- Acer Computer, the world's third largest PC vendor and Saudi Arabia's leading notebook provider, has signed a partnership agreement with Optimiza, a leading management consulting and technology services and solutions provider in the kingdom. The agreement empowers Optimiza to distribute Acer's commercial range of products including servers, desktops, notebooks and projectors within the kingdom, and provide after sales service.

Etisalat eyes Iran's mobile market
- UAE-based Etisalat, the second-largest Arab phone company by market value, is considering investments in Iran's mobile-phone market, reported Bloomberg. Chairman Mohammed Omran said it is 'too early to tell' if and how the company may enter the Iranian market.

Tagorg signs Microsoft deal
- Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization has expanded its licence agreement with Microsoft, to cover its 70 offices across 29 countries. The Professional Services company is consolidating software purchases to ensure each branch is using identical, up-to-date software. The company also plans to standardise on a common desktop and messaging infrastructure.

Tecom in JV talks with Dell
- Tecom Investments is in talks with computer giant Dell to set up a joint venture, although it has refused to give further details on the nature of the potential business deal. It also said it will be buying three companies in the Middle East and Africa this year. One will be a mobile telecoms company.

Batelco looks to India
- Bahrain Telecommunications (Batelco) is buying a stake in an Indian wireless carrier. Speaking during the World Economic Forum, Chief Executive Officer Peter Kaliaropoulos said the company was in discussions with other publicly listed companies as well. He called it a growth opportunity. Batelco is trying to expand overseas to help with its growth strategy.
