Qualcomm opens Dubai office
- US-based Qualcomm Incorporated, a developer of wireless technologies and data solutions, has announced that it has opened an office in Dubai Internet City. The office will serve as a hub for Qualcomm's regional business interests and will provide support for device manufacturers, network operators and other industry participants that are driving the area's fastgrowing mobile broadband market, the company said in a statement.

US presses Turkcell to scrap Syria deal
- The US is putting pressure on Turkish mobile phone operator Turkcell to abandon a $1bn takeover of a cellphone company owned by a Syrian tycoon targeted by American sanctions, reported Reuters. Syriatel is at least 69% owned by Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of President Bashar Al Assad. Washington imposed sanctions on Makhlouf in February for alleged involvement in public corruption in Syria. The US is warning American investors that there could be legal implications for doing business with Makhlouf.

Etisalat unveils new router
- Etisalat has unveiled a new router that will enable its subscribers to connect their computer networks to the internet in areas previously outside the reach of the UAE's telecom operator, reported Gulf News. The new router will use a SIM card to connect to Etisalat's 3.5G mobile phone network. Routers normally require a physical connection, but the recent construction boom in the UAE have left numerous customers waiting for the telecoms to extend the range of their existing infrastructure. The new network will allow customers to bridge that gap until a permanent, physical connection can be made.

Etisalat eyes Indian market
- Etisalat may spend up to $4bn on an acquisition or a licence to enter India, the world's second-largest mobile phone market, reported Reuters. Etisalat's Chairman Mohammad Omran said the time is right for a purchase because the market value for shares in India has dipped a little. He said the amount the company spends on an acquisition will depends on the opportunity that is available and on how much of a per cent of the entity that it will buy.

Oman to issue 2nd fixed phone licence
- Oman plans to auction a licence for a second fixed-line service provider in the near future, reported Gulf News. Consultants have already been appointed to prepare terms and conditions for the auction for the new licence, which would include broadband, said Naashiah S. Al Kharusi, a member of the country's Telecommunication Regulatory Authority.

Oman Telecom posts profit
- Oman Telecom has released figures showing that its Q1 profits have risen 60%, driven by subscriber increases. Net income at the country's largest phone service provider for the period has risen to $99.7m.

Etisalat expands access
- UAE telecom operator Etisalat has announced that it will begin selling a new router to allow internet access beyond coverage areas. The router, which can be powered through a USB port, will use a SIM card to connect to the company's 3.5G mobile network. Up to 32 people will be able to use the system simultaneously.

Sun pushes ME growth
- Sun Microsystems is hoping to double its growth in the Middle East and Africa over a 12 month period with the launch of two new server systems based on the UltraSPARC(R) T2 Plus processor. Sun claims that the new servers have four times more memory and internal disk capacity than market competitors.
