Du to expand fibre-to-the-home network
- Du, the first company to roll out a fibre-to-the-home programme in the region, is planning further expansion of the network in Dubai, the company said. The network is to cover developments such as Burj Dubai, Dubai Palm Islands, The World and Dubai waterfront projects. Fibre to the home, also called 'fibre to the premises', is the installation and use of optical fibre from a central point directly to individual buildings to provide high-speed internet access.

Raytheon wins US Army contract in Iraq
- US-based Raytheon Company has been awarded a contract potentially worth $70m to provide infrastructure services for the US Army. DRS Technical Services, Inc. awarded Raytheon the 2008 $36.2m contract, which includes a 2009 option year worth $33.4m. Raytheon is providing subcontracting services to DRS as part of the Rapid Response contract from the US Army's Communications and Electronics Command.

Vodafone, partner to pay $2.1bn for Qatar license
- Vodafone Group and its local partner have announced that they will pay 7.72 billion riyals ($2.1bn) for Qatar's second mobile-phone license, reported Bloomberg. Vodafone and the Qatar Foundation plan to start operating in the first quarter of 2009 and must sell a 40% stake in their venture to the public by December.

New mobile TV licensing in UAE under way
- The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said it will begin the consultation process on the licensing of the broadcast of mobile television in the UAE, according to state news agency WAM. Currently a similar type of service is available through 3G streaming. However, this new mobile TV service is provided through a different technology and will enable the public to enjoy a wider selection of channels at better quality.

Etisalat introduces 1 Gbps internet leased lines
- Etisalat today announced the launch of new high speed internet leased lines ranging from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps for business users in the UAE. With this, Etisalat becomes the first provider in the region to offer internet leased lines of 1 Gbps. The new high speed Internet services will be offered over a 1 Gbps Ethernet access, according to a statement.

Vodafone CEO to step down
- Vodafone Group, the world's largest mobile phone operator by sales, has announced that Chief Executive Arun Sarin will step down and be replaced by his deputy Vittorio Colao, reported AP. Sarin, who has run the company for the past five years, will retire after its annual general meeting July 29. Vodafone also reported today that it posted a $13.2bn net profit for fiscal 2008 compared with a loss a year earlier.

Etisalat eyes alliances with top companies
- Etisalat may enter into alliances with major telecom companies in the future to 'cope with challenges that lie ahead', Mohammed Hassan Omran, chairman of the UAE-based telecom firm told delegates at an industry conference in Abu Dhabi. He said that the trend of alliances between telecom companies is becoming critical and is also the most suitable solution for the future, reported Khaleej Times.

Virtual mobile 'no threat' say Du and Etisalat
- The top executives of the two telecommunication providers in the UAE, Etisalat and Du, say they have nothing to fear from the introduction of competition from new mobile operators in the future. Speaking on the sidelines of the Middle East Communications Exhibition and Conference, the leaders were asked about Mobile Virtual Network Operators, which provide services to their customers over the existing infrastructure of licensed operators. Osman Sultan, CEO of du, said the networks were 'not a threat in a mature market' such as the UAE and it was 'natural that these things should happen'. Mohammad Hassan Omran, chairman of etisalat, agreed that their introduction into the UAE would be seen as 'an opportunity and not a threat'.
