  • Etisalat expands access

  • UAE telecom operator Etisalat has announced that it will begin selling a new router to allow internet access beyond coverage areas. The router, which can be powered through a USB port, will use a SIM card to connect to the company's 3.5G mobile network. Up to 32 people will be able to use the system simultaneously.

  • Sun pushes ME growth

  • Sun Microsystems is hoping to double its growth in the Middle East and Africa over a 12 month period with the launch of two new server systems based on the UltraSPARC(R) T2 Plus processor. Sun claims that the new servers have four times more memory and internal disk capacity than market competitors.

  • Global sets up telecom index

  • Global Investment House announced, it has set up the first GCC Telecom Index. The new index will track the performance of listed telecommunication companies as an integral part of the GCC region. Global's GCC Telecom Index comprises of 10 telecom stocks, with a total market capitalization of $138.36bn, representing 12.44% of the total market cap of the GCC listed stocks.

  • Vodafone-Qatar prepares for IPO

  • Vodafone-Qatar, the second mobile licence issued in the country, has appointed HSBC Middle East and Qatar National Bank to advise on its IPO. As per the terms of the contract issued last December the group has to sell 40% of its shares by June 30.

  • i2 launches Johannesburg HQ

  • i2, a mobile phones and IT products provider, announced the opening of its headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, to meet the growing demands of its group and the company's broad expansion in the region. The Johannesburg office will oversee all i2 operations in the Sub-Sahara region (Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Angola, reunion and Senegal) especially with the increase of its retail shops in those areas.

  • Dimension seeks to buy more Gulf firms

  • Dimension Data is seeking to buy more companies across the Gulf following its acquisition of 51% of UAE-based Data Processing Systems, reported Khaleej Times. Dimension, a global provider of services and solutions for the information and communications technology industry, in the near term is looking to acquire a company in Saudi Arabia that can run its operations in the kingdom and also in Qatar, said Saki Missaikos, Dimension Data's executive director for sales, Middle East and Africa.

  • Batelco profit up 11% in Q1

  • Bahrain Telecommunications Co (Batelco) said its first-quarter profit rose 11% on new subscribers, reported Bloomberg. Net income rose to 27.4 million dinars ($72.7m), or 19.1 fils a share from 17.2 fils a year earlier, the company said.

  • Weather Investments to reduce stake in Orascom

  • Italian holding company Weather Investments said it plans to participate in Orascom Telecom's offer to buy back up to 106 million of its shares. Weather said it intends to cash in part of its stake, while keeping its ownership of Orascom over 50%. Orascom is offering to buy back up to 10.3% of its own shares as a way to dispose of cash surpluses it says it cannot easily invest elsewhere, reported Reuters.
