Tecom rolls out Malta ICT JV
- Tecom Investments and Sama Dubai have launched the first phase of its SmartCity Malta joint venture. The $300m project seeks to develop the 20,034 square metres allocated for the ICT and media sector in the Mediterranean, to provide services for the European and North African markets.

Etisalat expands global roaming
- UAE telecom firm Etisalat has expanded its roaming partnerships to include 150 companies across the world. Customers will now be able to use their accounts to make and receive calls in 186 countries.

Batelco eyes Indian firm
- Batelco, Bahrain's national telecoms services provider, has joined the race for acquiring a 40% stake in Indian telecom service provider Spice Communications, which operates in the North Indian State of Punjab and South Indian State Karnataka, reported the Bahrain Tribune. Last month, Batelco announced that it was in talks with several Indian and pan Africa mobile telephone operators to buy stakes under its $4bn acquisition plan.

Etisalat partners with iPass
- UAE-based telecom provider Etisalat has announced a partnership with global mobility service provider iPass, enabling Etisalat Internet subscribers to access the Internet at over 60,000 wired and wireless locations in 150 countries. Subscribers travelling abroad will be able to use the roaming facility by entering their Etisalat Internet account log-in details. Customers can choose to log on at wi-fi hotspots or via a dial-up connection from their laptop or desktop computers worldwide, according to a statement.

UAE ends anti-piracy campaign
- The Business Software Alliance, in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Economy, has announced the end of a nationwide anti-piracy initiative titled 'Using unlicensed software can shut down your business'. The campaign, which ran from May 4 to June 10, aimed to spread awareness about intellectual property rights laws and the legal consequences of using and selling pirated and illegal software. The event also aimed to improve the country's global image as a secure IT investment destination.

Apple unveils new iPhone
- Apple Inc has unveiled a lower cost, next-generation iPhone with faster Internet access and the ability to run on advanced wireless networks. The new entry-level iPhone will cost $199 with 8 gigabytes of memory, compared with the $399 price of the older-generation phone with similar memory. The new device will go on sale beginning July 11 in 22 countries, but the only countries in the Middle East that will offer it are Egypt, Jordan and Qatar, reported AP.

Etisalat to launch payments by cellphone
- Emirates NBD bank and Etisalat will soon launch a pilot programme that will allow NBD customers to make payments at stores using a mobile phone. Customers using the system will simply need to wave their mobile phone at the point of sale machine to make an instant payment. Etisalat users who are also customers of NBD will be among the first to be able to use the service. Abdullah Hashim, Etisalat vice-president of enterprise solutions, said the pilot will be launched in the coming weeks and the programme will be commercial by the third quarter of 2009.

Nokia N78 on sale in Qatar
- Qatari telecom and IT provider Consolidated Gulf Co has begun sales of Nokia's N78 handset model. The handset features include a 3.2mega pixel camera and 8gb of memory, as well as an internet radio capability allowing access to thousands of stations online.
