UAE likely to get mobile TV service in 2009
- The UAE is hoping to make broadcast mobile TV services available in the country in 2009, reported Gulf News. The UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority plans to issue licences for the service by the end of this year, which will be valid for 10 years. The technologies available for broadcast mobile TV services are DVB-H, developed by Nokia, and Qualcomm's MediaFlo.

Nokia unveils two new Eseries in UAE
- Nokia has launched in the UAE the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 - the latest email-optimized devices from the Nokia Eseries product range. The Nokia E71 with full QWERTY keyboard and the slide-to-open Nokia E66 mobilize a broad range of personal or professional messaging needs, including Microsoft Exchange, the world's most widely adopted corporate e-mail solution. Both devices are expected to arrive in the UAE in July.

Thuraya's third satellite begins service
- UAE-based satellite services provider Thuraya has announced the commercial readiness of its third satellite, Thuraya-3, aimed at covering the Asia-Pacific region. The company's expanded coverage, which will include China, Australia, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia, will double the current market size covered by its satellite system to more than two billion people.

Projector imports to grow 38% by 2011
- Projector shipments to the Middle East and Africa are expected to grow over 38% from 325,000 units in 2008 to 449,000 units by 2011, according to Manish Bakshi, Managing Director of BenQ MEA. Market revenue is expected to reach $390m by 2011 from $367m in 2008 while the average selling price will fall to $867 by 2011 from $1,129 this year, reported Gulf News.

Tecom rolls out Malta ICT JV
- Tecom Investments and Sama Dubai have launched the first phase of its SmartCity Malta joint venture. The $300m project seeks to develop the 20,034 square metres allocated for the ICT and media sector in the Mediterranean, to provide services for the European and North African markets.

Etisalat expands global roaming
- UAE telecom firm Etisalat has expanded its roaming partnerships to include 150 companies across the world. Customers will now be able to use their accounts to make and receive calls in 186 countries.

Batelco eyes Indian firm
- Batelco, Bahrain's national telecoms services provider, has joined the race for acquiring a 40% stake in Indian telecom service provider Spice Communications, which operates in the North Indian State of Punjab and South Indian State Karnataka, reported the Bahrain Tribune. Last month, Batelco announced that it was in talks with several Indian and pan Africa mobile telephone operators to buy stakes under its $4bn acquisition plan.

Etisalat partners with iPass
- UAE-based telecom provider Etisalat has announced a partnership with global mobility service provider iPass, enabling Etisalat Internet subscribers to access the Internet at over 60,000 wired and wireless locations in 150 countries. Subscribers travelling abroad will be able to use the roaming facility by entering their Etisalat Internet account log-in details. Customers can choose to log on at wi-fi hotspots or via a dial-up connection from their laptop or desktop computers worldwide, according to a statement.
