- Dubai has been named the world's best holiday destination and the leading cruise port at the final World Travel Awards ceremony of the year. Held on the Turks and Caicos Islands on 2 December, the event was the result of a voting process involving 167,000 travel professionals worldwide. Other award winners were Burj Al Arab (best all-suite hotel), Qatar Airways (leading business class carrier), and Etihad Airways (leading first class carrier).

- One-third of the tourism projects being planned in the UAE will be cancelled because of the increasing difficulty of financing these projects, reported The National, citing Alex Kyriakidis, the global managing partner of tourism, hospitality and leisure at Deloitte. Of the remaining projects, a third will be delayed and only a third will be delivered on time, he added. One of the major reasons that these projects will be delayed or cancelled is because banks and investors still regard these projects as being part of the real estate industry, 'which is not doing very well now', he added.

- The Jumeirah Group has announced that it plans to operate a five-star hotel in Macau as part of an agreement with Hong Kong developer Shun Tak Limited. The Jumeirah Macau hotel is located in the tourist hub of Cotai and is scheduled for completion in 2013. The Jumeirah Macau hotel is the third management agreement for the Jumeirah Group in China. The previous two include the Jumeirah HanTang Xintiandi, scheduled to open in Shangahi in 2009 and the Jumeirah Guangzhou hotel, scheduled for 2011.

- The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is to open to the public today. The museum sits 60 metres off the coast of the Corniche and has been described as 'iconic' by the designer.

- Hospitality revenue in the GUlf has increased over the first nine months of 2008, but a downturn is expected in the coming months. Abu Dhabi reported a 39.9% change in revenue per room in the first nine months of the year, followed by Oman with 32.9% and Saudi Arabia with 23.1% while Dubai grew 4.7%, according to Deloitte.

- Layia Hospitality, which has recently opened its second property in Dubai, plans to expand by launching 11 more properties. With Layia Oak Hotel & Suites as the company's first fully serviced hotel property in Dubai, plans are afoot to open hotels in the four- and five-star categories as well as full service apartment property between November this year and 2011, according to Daniel Hajjar, CEO of Layia Hospitality.

- Abu Dhabi's Emirates Palace is to host the world's 'largest, record breaking fireworks display', to celebrate the UAE's 37th National Day. The fireworks will begin at 20.30, lasting for 45 minutes, and will be visible along the Abu Dhabi Corniche and across the Emirates Palace Marina. The hotel will also feature a laser display from December 1 to 3.

- Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has conducted a workshop in line with its sustainability projects in the emirate, accroding to a press statement. DTCM is targeting that hotels in the emirate reduce their carbon emissions by 20% by 2011. According to a senior manager at Avireal Middle East, the size of the carbon footprint produced by all 300 hotels in Dubai is equivalent to 60,000 round-trip flights between Dubai and London.
