- The UK government has approved the development of the London Gateway, which will become a national hub port for the country and will accommodate the world's largest container ships. Construction work will begin later this year on the 1,850 acre site, 25 miles from central London. More than Dhs11bn ($3bn) is being privately invested in the port by DP World, the fourth-largest global marine terminal company.

- Paris-based Vinci Construction Grands Projets, leader of a consortium of construction companies, and Middle East Dredging Company (Medco), have signed a $3bn contract with the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation to build a causeway between Qatar and Bahrain, reported the Bahrain Tribune. The project calls for the design and construction of a 40 km two-lane dual carriageway motorway between Qatar and Bahrain.

- Bahrain-based investment firm Arcapita Bank has acquired Pinnacle Real Estate, a developer and operator of logistics warehouses in Central and Eastern Europe, the company said in a statement. The transaction includes an existing portfolio of leased warehouses of approximately 230,000 square meters, as well as a land bank of nearly 1.5 million square meters for future development.

- The UAE capital will have its own light rail system, possibly with underground segments, within the next seven years, The National has reported. The light rail link will be complemented by a fast rail link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

- Over 70 shipping firms are participating in the Ship & Port + Europort Maritime 2008 in Doha. The exhibition runs for three days and is scheduled to be one of the largest maritime industry events in the region.

- Topaz Energy and Marine Ltd. has entered into the hydrocarbon market in Qatar as it bids to acquire Doha Marine Services for $123m, according to news reports. The acquisition leads to four of Topaz' own vessels being moved to Qatar.

- The emirate of Sharjah will have 25 public buses running on three intercity routes within the next two weeks, Gulf News has reported. The service is eventually set to expand to 142 buses on 18 intercity routes.

- Gulf Navigation Holding (Gulfnav) has received its latest vessel, Gulf Fanatir, newly-built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea. The chemical tanker was contracted at a cost of $54.35m, and is the first of a series of four sophisticated chemical carriers ordered by Gulfnav.
