- Egypt said it is willing to join a multinational operation under the banner of the United Nations to patrol the Gulf of Aden following a number of piracy attacks off Somalia's coast, Bloomberg has reported. Companies including Euronav NV and TMT Co, owners of ships designed to haul Middle East crude to Europe and the US, have said that they are reviewing whether to stop sending their carriers through the Suez Canal to avoid traveling near the site of most of the attacks off the coast of Somalia. A decision to avoid the Suez Canal would delay oil deliveries, reduce the supply of available vessels and add to insurance bills for shippers.

- Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co, South Korea's largest builder, has received a $611m order from Qatar Petroleum to build a ship-repair yard, reported Bloomberg. The yard will be completed by Dec. 31, 2009, the Seoul- based company said.

- GCC member states may be able to reach agreement on the specifics of the GCC Railway project by the end of 2008, reported MEED. The 1,500-kilometre project, which is expected to cost about $14bn and will connect all six member states, will be discussed at the next GCC Summit, in Muscat on 29-30 December. Members are said to be close to agreeing to final terms for the project, including the issue of whether to have a single regulator overseeing the project or six separate bodies.

- Following instructions from UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan cars older than 20 years will be allowed to carry on operating on the country's roads. These cars were to have been banned effective December 1, but this has now been suspended.

- Bahrain's first monorail line is expected to cost $1bn to build. The first of four proposed lines, the 23km stretch of track would start at Bahrain International Airport and head west to Manama, past the Bahrain Financial Harbour to Seef before turning south and passing Isa Town. It would then continue south along the Al Estiqlal Highway before ending at Alba, stopping at 18 stations along the way.

- On the Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) third anniversary, Chairman & Executive Director of the RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, said the authority is working round-the-clock to ensure motorists will be able to commute easily around Dubai. Future plans include the construction of 500km of new roads, and 120 multilayer interchanges at a cost of Dhs44m by 2020.

- So Safe International and China's Jinghai Transport has opened its joint venture Maxx Logistics, a new Dhs50m plus multi-purpose logistics facility, in Dubai's Jebel Ali Free Zone. The company is co-owned by Saudi based Almajdouie Group, capitalizing on the UAE logistics market's estimated $40bn industry by 2010.

- Egypt is likely to take a big hit in Suez Canal fees this fiscal year as piracy is curbing traffic through the canal. Shipping companies are avoiding the canal as it requires passing through the Gulf of Aden, scene of most pirate attacks. Egypt earned $5bn in Suez Canal fees this past fiscal year.
