  • Agility wins $23m hospital deal

  • Agility has expanded its role in regional healthcare after winning a $23.2m deal to provide logistics services for the provision of materials to the Al-Khafji Joint Operation (KJO) Hospital, said news reports. In 5-year partnership with healthcare supplier Bader Sultan & Brothers Co., Agility will deliver over 3,000 items to the hospital, such as pharmaceuticals, laboratory reagents, medical consumables and minor instruments.

  • Dubai to build world’s longest single arch bridge

  • The sixth bridge across the Dubai Creek has been named as the Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing. With 12 lanes, it will cost Dhs3bn and goes from Al Jaddaf near Bur Dubai to close to the Lagoons and Festival City. It will take four years to construct and once completed will be the longest single arched bridge in the world. The bridge will be 1,600m long and 64m wide. The arch rises to a height of 205m and is 667m long. On Friday the new 12-lane Garhoud Bridge across Dubai Creek fully opened.

  • Rail work closes airport tunnel

  • The Roads and Transport Authority said that the Airport Tunnel in Rashidiya is going to closed from 15th March to 14th April, to give way to construction works of Dubai Metro viaduct at the entry and exit points of the tunnel. Airport Tunnel will be closed in both directions on daily basis from 01.00 am (after midnight) up to 05.00 am of the same day, except for Fridays, Saturdays and official holidays.

  • Dubai World e-payment with CBD

  • Dubia World has tied up with Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) in order to facilitate payments from customers of Dubai World, including DP World and Jafza. This will be served through Dubai Trade's Central e-Payment Gateway to be launched at the Dubai Trade Portal by the end of this month.

  • Jafza opens US office

  • UAE-based Jafza International, the global free zone management and consultancy arm of Economic Zones World, has opened its North American headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. The office has become fully functional with the various administrative and business operations set in motion. Jafza signed the agreement with Orangeburg County in 2007 for the development of 1,300 acres of land into a modern logistics and distribution park. It will include light manufacturing, warehousing and distribution facilities.

  • UAE residents rap public transport

  • Nearly three out of four residents in the UAE believes the public transport system in the country is inadequate, according to a survey by Gulf News. The poll, which surveyed 972 UAE residents, found that fewer than 1 in 3 use some form of public transport. Among those who do, taxis are significantly more common than buses (72% as opposed to 58%). However, approval of the taxi service is considerably lower compared to bus service.

  • UAE to launch SMS weather alerts

  • The UAE has announced that it will soon begin sending SMS alerts to motorists regarding adverse weather condition, reported Khaleej Times, citing an official at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology. The decision came following a major road accident on Shaikh Zayed Road in Ghantoot on Tuesday, involving nearly 200 cars. The official said the alerts will help motorists plan their routes and prepare for weather conditions accordingly. The messages will caution people regarding bad weather conditions, stormy winds, sea tides and other weather-related precautions, he said.

  • Saudi woman drives, posts video on Youtube

  • Wajeha Al Huwaider, a prominent Saudi Arabian activist, posted a video on YouTube of herself driving a car, to mark International Women’s Day. Al Huwaider, who was arrested by police in 2006 for organizing a women’s rights protest, talks throughout the video about the need for women to be able to drive in Saudi Arabia. Women are prohibited from driving vehicles in the kingdom, in accordance with Saudi Arabian law.
