Agility opens Malaysia hub

Kuwait-based Agility has announced the opening of a new 13,000 sq.m logistics hub close to Kuala Lumpur, boosting the company's total warehousing capacity in Malaysia to over 34,000 sq.m. The new facitlity in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam has 12 loading docks and 14,000 pallet positions and dedicated areas for pick and pack, kitting to line operations, consolidation and deconsolidation, cross docking, RMA programs, and reverse logistics, the company has said. The new facility will become the new headquarters for Agility in Malaysia.

Gulf Navigation profits down 89%

Dubai-based oil and chemicals shipping company Gulf Navigation Holding, has said that its first-half profit had dropped 89% as demand for shipping declined. Net income had dropped to Dhs10.2m, compared to Dhs93m a year earlier, the company has said. First half revenues had also declined to Dhs170.1m, compared to Dhs200.8m for the same period of 2008. Operating profit had dropped by 46% to Dhs67.55m. The firm's total assets stood at Dhs2.996bn, up 4.6% compared to Dhs2.865bn for the same period last year.

Oman receives bids for Sohar jetty

Oman's port of Sohar has received bids for the contract to build the deep water Jetty serving the Vale Industrial Complex, MEED has reported. The project involves the construction of a 600-metre long jetty and new harbour basin that will serve a pelletizing plant and iron ore distribution centre that is being built by Brazilian mining company Vale.

Aqaba Gateway Group named preferred Ayla port bidder

Aqaba Development (ADC) in Jordan has said that Aqaba Gateway Group (AGG) is the highest ranking, qualified bidder for the city's new port. According to the Jordan Times, the Ayla New Port Consortium was ranked as the second highest bidder. ADC has also said it will enter into direct negotiations with the preferred bidder in the coming weeks over the terms and conditions of the development and operating agreement for the new port of Aqaba, aiming to sign a deal in October, should the parties reach an agreement regarding the terms and conditions.

Gulf Energy Maritime gets Panamax tanker

UAE-based Gulf Energy Maritime (GEM), the Middle East's largest independent commercial product tanker operator, has taken delivery of Gulf Cobalt, its sixth Panamax tanker. The 75,000 dwt product oil tanker is the second of four Panamax vessels scheduled for delivery this year from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), as well as being the fourth of six newbuilds scheduled for delivery to GEM this year.

DP World throughput down by 10%

DP World has announced its TEU (twenty-foot equivalent container units) across its 49 terminals has handled more than 20 million TEU in the first six months of 2009. After consolidation, the terminals reported a throughput of 12.3 million TEU, a decline of 10% against the same period last year. This year, DP World has new terminals at Doraleh, Djibouti and two terminals in Algeria, at Algiers and Djen-Djen.

Aramex Q2 profit climbs 30%

Aramex has recorded a 30% rise in its Q2 2009 profit at Dhs50m, compared to Dhs38.4m for the corresponding period in 2008. Revenues for the second quarter this year had dropped 10% to Dhs485m, from the Dhs539.3m recorded during the same period in 2008. The company's net profit for the first half of 2009 stood at Dhs93.1m, a growth of 25% over Dhs74.6m achieved in the first six months of 2008.

Kuwait to offer stakes in transport projects

Kuwait plans to auction stakes in three transportation system projects worth up to KD1.5bn next year, reported Gulf News. The government had approved the projects to develop the country's first railway and monorail systems. For each company formed, a 26% stake will be offered in an auction for local or international investors. The government will own a 24% stake, and the remaining 50% will be offered to Kuwaiti investors.

Abu Dhabi unveils new parking rules

Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport today unveiled details of its 'Public Parking Management Strategy'. The measures, which will be phased from Q4 this year, include increasing the number of parking spaces in key areas, enforcing time limits, and introducing paid parking, residents' parking schemes, and park-and-ride options in identified 'hot-spots'. The DoT also announced tariffs for the first time - with a charge for premium parking on main streets set at Dhs3 per hour and an Dhs2 per hour charge in other locations. Residents' permits will cost Dhs800 per year for the first car, and Dhs1200 per year for a second car.

Jordan issues tender for port

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC) has invited bids for a contract to build a phosphate export terminal at Aqaba, reported MEED. Located in the most southern part of Aqaba's port complex, the project involves building a 4-million-tonne-a-year (t/y) rock terminal with truck unloading and handling facilities, storage facilities, pipe conveyors and other marine terminal facilities. Bids are due by September 28.

Abu Dhabi invites bids to study light rail

The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport has invited bids from consultancy companies to perform a study to build a light rail system in the capital. The light rail will be about 340 kilometers long and serve as part of the emirate's plan to develop a comprehensive passenger and freight transport system that would include roads, metro and light rail transit, the department said today in a statement.

New company to support GCC navies

A new Abu Dhabi-based company has been formed that will offer a complete range of support services to maritime defence forces and other vessel operators in the GCC. Gulf Logistics and Naval Support is a joint venture launched by Abu Dhabi Ship Building and the UK's BVT Surface Fleet.

Shoaibi Group, GMS in offshore services JV

Saudi Arabia-based Shoaibi Group and UAE-based Gulf Marine Services have formed a joint venture to provide offshore barge operation services. The new company, Gulf Maritime Services Saudi Arabia, will be based in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, and will provide floating or self-elevating offshore platforms, which will be used by oil companies for offshore well maintenance, construction and accommodation.

Suez Canal revenue falls 7.2%

Suez Canal Authority Chairman Ahmed Fadel said the waterway's annual revenue had fallen 7.2% in fiscal 2008-2009 to $4.74bn, Reuters has reported. A total of 19,354 ships passed through the canal in the fiscal year, compared with 21,080 in 2007-2008. The global crisis had hit revenues from September, but flows had improved gradually in recent months, he said.

Kuwait may privatise some departments

Major General Mahmoud AlـDousari, Assistant Undersecretary for Kuwait's Traffic Affairs department has said the country's ministry of interior plans to privatise some of its departments in order to relieve the financial burden on the state and to make more manpower available in the security and traffic law enforcement sectors, Kuna has reported. The privatisation would include the maintenance and inspection of small cars that precede the renewal of vehicle licensing, as well as parking lots, impounding cars and towing vehicles involved in accidents, he said.
