UAE rail network approved

The UAE Ministerial Council for Services has approved the creation of a country-wide rail network, which would see a double track rail service built from Ruwais in Abu Dhabi to Fujairah. The Union Railways Company will offer tenders for the project by 2015.

APM Terminals relocates HQ to Dubai

APM Terminals has relocated its regional headquarters from Muscat to the Dubai Maritime City. APM chose Dubai as its new regional headquarters based on its strategic location as a regional business hub and major airport. APM runs 12 container terminals in the region and Dubai's location allows the company to be closer to customers in the markets of Africa, the Middle East and India.

Dubai's taxi fleet to rise to 10,000

The number of taxis in Dubai will increase to 10,000 by the year end from the present strength of 8,000, according to Yousef Al Madani, Director of Transport Systems Department at the Public Transport Agency. He said a satellite surveillance system will be in place to help manage the fleet. The upgrading process is set to boost the efficiency of the fleet, enhance the level of services and also step up safety standards and driver satisfaction.

Saudi, Qatar ink maritime border pact

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have signed a border demarcation agreement at the UN headquarters that ratifies the 1965 agreement between the two Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The agreement is now an official UN document and is legally binding under the international law.

Dubai RTA: 5m taxis booked in 2008

Statistics released by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have shown that five million taxis were booked in 2008, in 7.4 million calls. The number of vehicles booked automatically over the IVR system topped 1.2m. The RTA has said that average response times stood at 14 minutes.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi may link metros

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority is considering extending the Red line of the Dubai Metro to the border where it would meet Abu Dhabi's planned metro line, MEED has reported. Dubai's Red line is scheduled to open in September, with the first phase of the emirate's Green line to follow in March 2010.

Dubai cracks down on drivers using cell phones

The rate of people being fined in Dubai for using their mobile phones while driving has increased rapidly this year. In January, 866 offences were recorded, while in February there were 1,139. The number of fines issued for the offence all of last year totalled 2,552. The offence is punishable with four black points and a Dhs200 ($55) fine.

The Dubai World Trade Centre in partnership with the Dubai International Marine Club has announced plans to expand the Dubai International Boat Show's berthing spaces. An increase in participation from companies around the world has prompted the organisers to review the facilities to accommodate the upsurge in exhibition requests. The expansion will include increased land and marina display areas.

Agility wins US army deal

Agility Defence and Government Services, the public sector arm of Agility, has announced that it has signed a deal for delivery services for Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) stores around the world. Under the deal, Agility will be responsible for clearing and transporting store merchandise destined for AAFES customers at US military installations in western Iraq sites via Jordan from Atlanta.

Dubai Boat Show posts strong sales

The Dubai International Boat Show has reported strong number of sales transactions and over 26,000 quality regional buyers, despite the global economic trading conditions, according to organizers. With 45% increased participation, Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai International Marine Club have decided to expand exhibition facilities at DIMC for the next exhibition in 2010. This will include increased availability of land and marina display areas as well as reconfiguration of the exhibition site.

Car accident fatalities on rise in UAE

The number of people killed in traffic accidents in the UAE rose to 1,071 in 2008 compared to 1,056 in 2007, according to Colonel Gaith Al Za'abi, Director of Traffic Department at Ministry of Interior. However, the rate of deaths due to traffic accidents declined to 13.3 per hundred thousand of the population in 2008 compared to 15.8 in 2007. A total of 10,611 traffic accidents occurred in the country in 2008, a 19% increase over the previous year, reported Gulf News.

Dubai designates 700 buses to cater to metro

Dubai transport officials said nearly 700 buses will be used to exclusively cater to Metro stations in the emirate as part of the 'complete journey plan' to boost the use of public transport. Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said 80% of Dubai will be covered by the public transport system within the next two years.
