  • 'Mystery riders' to monitor Dubai buses

  • Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority plans to use 'mystery riders' to monitor bus drivers under a new initiative to improve service, RTA has announced. As part of the initiative, an undercover official will ride buses and observe the driver's driving skills and his interaction with passengers.

  • Iraqi port traffic doubles

  • Imports at Iraq's main port have doubled since April due to the government's crackdown on Shiite militias in Basra province, reported Reuters. The Umm Qasr port, entry point for 80% of Iraq's imports, is running at full capacity, with container ships having to double bank at the investment-starved facility's 22 berths, officials said.

  • UAE to launch women-only bus service

  • Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority plans to introduce a bus service exclusively for women by the end of this year, reported Khaleej Times. Essa Al Dossari, CEO of Public Transport Agency at the RTA, women commuters have been demanding more seats in the buses and there are complaints that bus drivers often do not stop to pick up women passengers because of non-availability of seats for them. Presently, there are only 12 seats in each bus for women.

  • Abu Dhabi launches road projects

  • Abu Dhabi is planning major road projects to support developmental activity on the mainland, especially in Al Gharbia (the Western Region), reported Gulf News. The project includes the reconstruction of the Mafraq Interchange, which is about 30 kilometres from Abu Dhabi City and serves as a gateway for motorists from Dubai and Al Ain to Al Gharbia.

  • Dubai to roll out mobile speed cameras

  • Dubai Police and Dubai Media Inc have launched a joint campaign for increased traffic awareness, involving the deployment of up to 20 new mobile video cameras, according to a Gulf News report. The cameras will be placed in undercover police patrol cars.

  • DHL opens in Dubai Festival City

  • DHL has opened a new service point in Dubai Festival City. Core DHL services on offer include DHL Express 9 and DHL Express 12 as Time Definite options for the more urgent deliveries, along with the standard end-of-day DHL Express Worldwide. The store is located on the ground floor of the mall, near Chili's Restaurant, and operates from Sunday to Saturday, between 10 am to 10 pm.

  • Dubai Maritime City tests mobile boat hoist

  • Dubai Maritime City said it has successfully assembled and functionally-tested the world's largest mobile boat hoist at its facilities, in 45 days. The hoist weighs 300 tonnes and will be load-tested in early August 2008 to be fully operational in October this year.

  • Agility acquires Danish forwarder

  • Kuwait-based Agility has 100% acquired the Danish, CF Geologistics A/S, a Copenhagen-based forwarding specialist offering tailor-made air and ocean freight solutions. CF Geologistics has been acting as a joint venture partner and agent for Agility since 2004, with Agility having a 29% stake in the company.
