Aramex's net profit up 21%
- Aramex, a Dubai-based transportation and logistics solution firm, yesterday reported 24% growth in revenue to Dhs494.4m ($134.7m) for the first quarter of 2008, up from Dhs399.6m in the same period last year. Net profit for the first quarter rose 21% to Dhs36.2m, from Dhs29.9m for the same period last year, the company said in a statement.

Sharjah to launch bus service in May
- The UAE emirate of Sharjah will implement a new intra-city public transport bus service on three routes starting in May, reported Gulf News. The service will start with 25 buses on three routes while more buses will be added later this year. The plan calls for a total of 142 buses on 18 routes covering different areas in the emirate. There will be a fixed fare of Dhs3 (82 cents) on all three routes, which will be operational from 5:00am to 11.30pm.

UAE unifies traffic system
- The first phase of the Unified Traffic System (UTS) in the UAE has become operational, reported Gulf News. The UTS now links all traffic departments in the country allowing inter-emirate transactions for registration, cancellation or transfer of ownership of cars. The system uses a complete database of all traffic files across all the emirates in the UAE.

Swift swears on sea-air success
- Swift Group said its Sea-Air Model has met top-rate performance during the last quarter of 2007 and the first quarter of 2008, meeting 99% of its KPI. The logistics company uses a multimodal transport operation which combines sea and air modes of transport from the Far East to Africa via Dubai.

Agility appoints country manager for Jordan
- Rani Wehbe has been appointed Agility's Country Manager for Jordan, where he will be responsible for developing the commercial business, operations and ensuring the support and growth of other Agility business groups in the kingdom. Prior to this new position, Wehbe worked with Agility for two years as Director of Sales in Kuwait.

Dubai tunnel to close for 2 months
- Al Shindagha Tunnel, which links Bur Dubai and Deira, will be partially closed at night for maintenance work from April 16 to June 12, reported Gulf News. Hussain Al Banna, Director of Right of Way Service Department at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, said the tunnel will be closed from Bur Dubai to Deira side from 1am to 6am from April 16 to 19, May 12 to 15 and June 9 to 12. The tunnel will be closed from Deira to Bur Dubai side from April 20 to 23, May 5 to 8 and June 2 to 5. The closure time will be from 2am to 7am on Fridays, Saturdays and any other public holidays falling during the maintenance period.

Dubai may invest in port, logistics parks in Congo
- Dubai World explored the possiblity of investing in the port at Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo, and the setting up of logistics parks to support it when Chairman of Dubai World, HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem met the President HE Denis Sassou-Nguesso during his visit to the Republic of Congo earlier this week. Highlighting the vital role played by logistics parks in developing business for ports, Bin Sulayem pointed to the example of Jebel Ali port and free zone and the synergy that exists between the two in Dubai.

Metro branding project draws huge response
- More than 250 companies have expressed interest in obtaining branding rights for the Dubai Metro Naming Rights Project, which was launched two weeks ago, reported Gulf News. Abdul Mohsin Ebrahim, Chief Executive Officer for Strategic and Corporate Governance at RTA, said the companies include property and business firms, local and international banks, and large multinational blue-chip corporations. The RTA has offered 23 out of 47 stations and two lines of the Dubai Metro project for corporate branding to raise revenue. The remaining 16 stations will continue to bear the names of landmarks and historic areas.
