Driverless trains tested
- Dubai Metro will test driverless trains from mid-May, according to a Gulf News report. Residents will be able to see the trains undergoing preliminary tests and passengerless runs on a 3.5km section of track between the Jebel Ali industrial area and the Mall of the Emirates.The $4.2bn project is scheduled to begin in September 2009.

Jebel Ali expansion on track
- Phase two of Jebel Ali port's Terminal 2 expansion project will be ready by February 2009. DP World will move all of its cargo operations across from Dubai's Port Rashid by the end of 2008, with 1m TEUs coming online in August, and a further 1m TEUs in October, Khaleej Times has reported. The final 1m TEU capacity will come online in February 2009.

RTA opens new route for water bus
- Dubai's Road and Transport Authority has launched a new water bus service for passengers travelling between Al Seef and Al Sabkha stations across the Dubai Creek, reported Gulf News. The agency said there is an increase in demand for marine transport as about 613 passengers initially used the new service.

Emaar to build tram in Dubai
- Emaar Properties is building a Dhs500m advanced tram system for its Dhs73bn ($20bn) Downtown Burj Dubai project. The 4.6 km tram will be the first in Dubai to offer two synchronized services within one tram transportation system, a company statement said. The mixed-use development comprises over 30,000 homes, residential towers, nine hotels and over 3.77 million sq ft of retail space.

Dubailand plans 50km tram and monorail
- Dubailand will build 50 to 60 kilometres of combined tram and monorail lines to help people move about the mega development, reported Gulf News. Dubailand CEO Mohammad Al Habbai said specific details are still to be worked out for the transport system, which he believes will drastically cut travel time within the zone. Dubailand, a three billion square feet development, is projected to have more people living in it than Dubai's current population of more than 1.5 million.

Aramex's net profit up 21%
- Aramex, a Dubai-based transportation and logistics solution firm, yesterday reported 24% growth in revenue to Dhs494.4m ($134.7m) for the first quarter of 2008, up from Dhs399.6m in the same period last year. Net profit for the first quarter rose 21% to Dhs36.2m, from Dhs29.9m for the same period last year, the company said in a statement.

Sharjah to launch bus service in May
- The UAE emirate of Sharjah will implement a new intra-city public transport bus service on three routes starting in May, reported Gulf News. The service will start with 25 buses on three routes while more buses will be added later this year. The plan calls for a total of 142 buses on 18 routes covering different areas in the emirate. There will be a fixed fare of Dhs3 (82 cents) on all three routes, which will be operational from 5:00am to 11.30pm.

UAE unifies traffic system
- The first phase of the Unified Traffic System (UTS) in the UAE has become operational, reported Gulf News. The UTS now links all traffic departments in the country allowing inter-emirate transactions for registration, cancellation or transfer of ownership of cars. The system uses a complete database of all traffic files across all the emirates in the UAE.
