  • Etihad orders A320 simulator

  • Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways has ordered a CAE 7000 Series A320 full-flight simulator. The simulator is scheduled for delivery next February and it will cost nearly $15m at list prices. It can be adapted to recreate the flight deck of any aircraft in the Airbus A320 range; Etihad introduced its first A320 in September and it now operates three of the planes to a range of destinations across the Gulf.

  • Iraqi Airways sell-off

  • Iraq's Acting Transport Minister Bangen Rekani has told our sister publication Meed that the war-torn country plans to sell stakes in three of Iraqi Airways' units next year in a bid to raise $100m. The sections likely to go under the hammer are the ground handling, maintenance and catering units and holdings of up to 65% are likely to be offered. The carrier is looking to buy ten planes from Boeing.

  • Air Arabia chief backs Mideast

  • Adel Ali, the CEO of Sharjah's Air Arabia, has said the Middle East's aviation sector is 'poised for significant, sustained growth'. Ali said the region's fleet of over 600 planes is the youngest in the world, while the Middle East also has more planes on order than other area. Ali stressed the budget segment was in good shape with one in every eight commercial flights being flown by a low-cost carrier.

  • Arinc wins DIA deal

  • Arinc Managed Services (AMS), a provider of operations, maintenance and staffing support for airports, has begun IT installation and maintenance services at Dubai International Airport (DIA). AMS will provide installation, testing and round-the-clock maintenance for seven IT systems at the airport's existing Terminals One and Two and Concourse One, as well as its new Terminal Three and Concourse Two. Last year, AMS won a contract at Cairo International Airport.

  • Hajjis at UAE airports

  • A total of 9,600 Hajjis arrived back at the UAE's airports yesterday, Saturday, after completing their pilgrimage, with 7,000 passing through Dubai International Airport (DIA) and the remainder via Abu Dhabi International Airport, reported Gulf News. 18 special Hajj flights arrived at DIA yesterday, Saturday, with 14 operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines and four by Emirates; 22 more flights are expected today. 30,000 pilgrims should arrive in Dubai during the week.

  • DAE sells Landmark unit

  • Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) is to sell Landmark Aviation's airport services arm for $436m to US based private equity firms GTCR Golder Rauner and Encore FBO, reported Emirates Business 24/7. DAE acquired Landmark Aviation alongside Standard Aero from The Carlyle Group for $1.9bn in early August. DAE is retaining the maintenance, repair and overhaul part of Landmark's business and the transaction is likely to be completed in Q1 2008.

  • Qatar eyes smaller planes

  • Qatar Airways could purchase smaller sized aircraft manufactured by the likes of Mitsubishi, Bombardier and Embraer to use specifically on its intra Gulf routes, reported The Peninsula. The carrier is considering buying 100 seater planes and is looking at 2013 for the start of delivery. Qatar Airways could look to buy ten planes initially with a further ten as an option.

  • Emirates, SriLankan strife

  • Emirates has said talks regarding the renewal of its ten year management contract with SriLankan Airlines will definitely be affected by the cancellation of the work permit for its CEO for Sri Lanka last week, reported Gulf News. The Sri Lankan government terminated Peter Hill's permit after he failed to accommodate President Mahinda Rajapakse, and his entourage of 35, on a flight from London. Emirates has a 43.6% stake in SriLankan.
