Obama wins re-election as US president

Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term as US President, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney. With results in from most states, Obama has secured the 270 votes in the electoral college needed to win the race. But the final margin of victory remains uncertain, as swing states Virginia, Florida and Colorado are still too close to call. Under the US constitution, each state is given a number of electoral votes in proportion to its population. The candidate who wins 270 electoral votes becomes president. Obama has won at least 281 electoral votes to Romney's 203, according to the latest official tally.
