- PRESS RELEASE
The Oman Football Association (OFA) is delighted to announce a brand new partnership with Italian football governing body, Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico (Lega Pro). The deal will see the two organizations working together in a knowledge sharing partnership that will allow OFA and Lega Pro to share best practice within specific areas such as refereeing, coaching and football academy development.
Headquartered in Florence, Lega Pro is the governing body that runs two of the most popular football divisions in Italy - the Prima Divisione and Seconda Divisione. Lega Pro takes 69 clubs all over Italy and organizes competitions such as Lega Pro Coppa Italia, Berretti National Championship and Lega SuperCoppa. The Football for Youth concept is a key part of Lega Pro's mission; the initiative acts as a "laboratory" for the new generation of football stars with more than 2,000 professional football players and more than 6,500 youth players participating in the programme.
Fans can see the knowledge sharing partnership live in action when Italian Lega Pro and the Italian Under 22 Olympic team travel to Muscat later this month for an Oman v Italy friendly match on November 29 at the Royal Oman Police Stadium. Oman's Olympic team will then travel to Italy aboard Oman Air, OFA's key partner and the Official Carrier for Omani National Team, for a second leg match on December 12 in Milan.
OFA Chairman Sayyid Khalid Al Busaidy commented: "To share best practice and develop close relations with an organization such as Lega Pro is a very positive thing for the development of Omani football. As we continue to aim towards competing in Brazil in 2014, the co-operation with Lega Pro and the chance to play friendly games against one of the world's leading footballing nations is a fantastic opportunity."
Lega Pro President Mario Macalli added: "This is a very important step for Lega Pro as we establish our first ever partnership with a football association in the Middle Eastern region. Football is a vehicle for exchange not only for our players but also for exchanges of a technical and professional nature. We look forward to working with the Oman Football Association closely in the coming months and years."
The announcement of the new partnership with Lega Pro coincides with the final build-up to Oman's upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualification match against Japan in Muscat on November 14, a game that will likely be pivotal for the team's Brazil 2014 qualification hopes.
