The Oman Shura Council has approved a proposal by the cabinet to increase the country's minimum wage and impose curbs on the employment of foreigners, aiming to prevent joblessness among Omani citizens, Reuters has reported. The private sector minimum wage for Omani citizens will be raised by more than 60% to OR325 ($844) a month effective from July 1. The council also approved restricting the number of foreign workers in Oman to 33% of the country's total population "to create an employment balance", but without introducing a timeframe.
