Prices down for 13 groups of building materials in September 2012 Y-o-Y, reports SCAD

Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD) issued today its monthly report on the prices of building materials for the month of September 2012.

The report presents an analysis of the movements in the prices of the various materials used in the construction industry in Abu Dhabi retail market, comparing September 2012 prices with those of August 2012 and September 2011.

The dissemination of this important report, which presents a wide range of price data, is intended to serve the needs of data users in the public and private sectors for the purposes of research, planning and decision making in ways that support the construction sector as well as related and dependent sectors.

Prices falls: September 2012/2011

As SCAD's report reveals, decreases were recorded in the average monthly prices of 13 groups of building materials during September 2012 compared with September 2011. The falls ranged between 0.1% for Aggregates and Sand and 25.0% for "wires for apartments".

Wires

The average prices of "Wires" decreased in September 2012 compared with September 2011. "Wires for apartments" accounted for the largest decrease (25.0%), while "Wires for small buildings" and "Residential towers" decreased by 15.0% and 9.0% respectively.

Steel

The average price of "Steel" retreated by 10.7%, with drops in the component items of the group ranging between 6.1% and 23.3%. Steel prices have decreasing steadily since the beginning of the year.

Prices rises: September 2012/2011


Waterproofing products

The report reveals a rise of 15.7% in the average prices of "Waterproofing products" reflecting increases in the prices of most items within the group.

Glass

The average prices of the "Glass" group advanced by 9.0% in September 2012 compared with September 2011. During the first nine months of 2012, the increases ranged between 2.8% in January and 18.3% in May compared with the same period in the previous year.

Cement

The average prices of "Cement" increased by 6.0% in September 2012 compared with September 2011.

Sanitary ware

The average prices of the "bathroom set without accessories" and "stainless sink steel with mixer-single" groups increased by 11.8% and 7.0% respectively. Meanwhile average prices of the "bathroom set with accessories" group decreased by 0.8% compared with September 2011.

Building materials prices: Q3/Q2 2012

As SCAD's report indicates, changes were recorded in the average prices of most groups of building materials during Q3 2012 compared with Q2 2012.

Increases ranged between 0.3% for "False ceilings" and 10.5% for the "Construction labour cost" group.

The average price for "Diesel", "Natural stone", and "Bathroom set with accessories" remained stable over Q3 2012 compared with Q2 2012.

On the other hand the prices of several groups decreased in Q3 2012 compared with Q2 2012. These include the average prices of "Wires for residential towers" which decreased by 9.6%, "Wires for apartments" and "Concrete", down by 5.6 percent for each, "Cement" (down 4.6%), and "uPVC pipes" (down 2.6%).

Building materials prices: Q3 2012/2011

Comparing Q3 2012 with Q3 2011, the report finds that the average prices of most building materials retreated, with decreases ranging from 0.3% for "Sanitary ware- bathroom set with accessories" to 21.4% for "Wires for apartments". In addition, "Wires for residential towers" decreased by 15.3%, "Wires for small buildings" by 15.2%, "PVC Pipes" by 14.7% and "Steel" by 9.9%.

Increases ranged between 0.7% for "Cement blocks" and 17.9% for "Waterproofing products". Increases were also recorded in "Sanitary ware- bathroom set without accessories" (up 12.6%) and "Glass" (up 11.5%).

The average price for "Diesel" remained stable during Q3 2012, compared with Q3 2011.

Building materials prices: September/August 2012

Varying changes were reported in the average prices of building materials groups in September compared with August 2012, with increases ranging from 0.8% for the "False ceiling" group to 4.8% for the "Power cable" group. Price falls for the same months compared were in the range of 1.7% for the "Roofing materials" group, and 9.5% for the "Wires for apartment" group.

Cement

The average prices of "Cement" went up by 4.3% in September 2012 compared with August 2012, due to an increase in the prices of both "Portland Cement\ Al- Etihad\ Ton\ U.A.E." by 18.2% and "Gypsum/ Oman/ ton/ Oman" by 8.3%.

Power cable

The average prices of "Power cables" advanced 4.8% MoM in September 2012, as a result of increases in all items falling under this group.

Tiles and marble

The average price of the "Tiles and marble" group increased by 4.0% in September 2012, with all items within this group showing increases of 0.5-19.1%. The group's average monthly price has been volatile since the beginning of the current year.

Glass

The average prices of "Glass" increased by 3.7% in September 2012, due to an increase in the price of "Clear glass / Saudi Arabia".

Steel

The average prices of "Steel" decreased by 2.7% in September compared with August 2012, as most items within this group dropped by 1.4% for "Structural steel beams from Korea & Japan" to 11.7% for "B.R.C. mesh\ 6 mm (142)\U.A.E.".

Waterproofing products

The price index of "Waterproofing products" decreased by 4.4% in September 2012 compared with August 2012, with all items within this group showing price falls.

Wires

The average price of "Wires for apartments" and "Small building" decreased by 9.5% and 6.8% respectively, while the average price of "Wires for residential towers" increased by 3.1%.

SCAD's report monitors the prices of 21 groups of building materials

SCAD's monthly report of building materials prices report surveys the prices of 21 groups of commodities and services that represent the most important materials used in the construction activity, including cement, aggregate, sand, wood, steel, concrete, cement blocks, etc.

SCAD has published this report on a monthly basis since 2008. The report data are collected by the Centre's field staff on a monthly basis, in line with the directives of the emirate's leadership for the development of economic sectors and support of their stability in all areas of interest to decision makers, policy planners, researchers, etc.
