A recent study has shone the spotlight on the historic development of Qatar's economy, and the potential challenges it may face in the future. Entitled 'Qatar's economy: Past, present and future', the review article was published in QScience Connect, an open access, peer-reviewed journal from QScience.com.
The study details Qatar's economic emergence in chronological order, beginning with the nation's independence in 1971 and concluding with an analysis of the nation's ongoing steps towards realising a knowledge-based economy.
Arend Kuster, Managing Director at QScience.com, said, "We are proud to publish this important review on Qatar's economy which gives and unprecedented deep understanding on the fast-paced developments here in Qatar. We are grateful that both authors have selected QScience Connect to release their highly significant findings."
Describing Qatar's economic ascent as one of "few parallels", the review reveals that the nation's successful development of its hydrocarbon resources did not occur "by chance" but was in fact the product of "visionary and committed national leadership, robust and mutually rewarding relationships with international partners, and vigorous execution."
In a closing section entitled 'Looking Ahead', the review details Qatar's medium and long-term prospects, concluding, "If Qatar can succeed in reshaping incentives, growing the capabilities of its citizens and expanding their horizons, it will measure up to the challenges of the new century, creating a durable legacy for future generations." The review is currently accessible and free to read on QScience.com.
