Abu Dhabi to ban plastic bags

Abu Dhabi's Centre of Waste Management has drafted a resolution banning the use of plastic bags at shopping centres in the emirate, WAM has reported. The resolution has been submitted to the Executive Council for approval. Plastic bags will be replaced with paper or cloth ones. The proposal imposes a fine of not less than Dhs10,000 against offenders.

Saudi gold consumption tops SR16.5bn

Gold consumption in Saudi Arabia grew last year by 17% in terms of value, breaking the SR16.5bn barrier, compared with SR13.8bn in 2007. Conversely, the total demand in terms of weight fell by 4% to 122.4 tonnes. In the fourth quarter of 2008 the kingdom fell to seventh in the world in terms of demand for jewellery and gold jewellery.
