Qatar has formed a national body aimed at creating a “safer online environment by raising awareness about Internet safety issues and improving online safety education,” Gulf Times has reported. The National Committee for Internet Safety “will focus on creating digitally literate individuals who are empowered to make the right decisions for themselves and their families when using the Internet,” said Fatma Ali al-Noaimi, committee member and Cyber Safety Section manager at ictQATAR. The committee will also work to commission research around internet safety, offer support to organisations and individuals and identify specific solutions to a range of internet safety issues.

The source code for antivirus firm Symantec's pcAnywhere utility has been released by a hacker on Tuesday, raising fears that others could find security holes in the product and attempt takeovers of customer computers, Reuters has reported. The move followed failed email negotiations over a $50,000 payout to the hacker calling himself ‘YamaTough’ to destroy the code. The negotiations have bought Symantec time while it issued fixes to the pcAnywhere programme, which allows customers to access their desktop machines from another location. "Symantec was prepared for the code to be posted at some point and has developed and distributed a series of patches since January 23, to protect our users against known vulnerabilities," said company spokesman Cris Paden.

      <![CDATA[
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced it has started manufacturing its chips at IBM's facilities. The move aims to ensure AMD’s ability to supply its next-generation A-series Fusion chips code-named ‘Trinity’ to PC makers and be in position to compete against Intel Corp's Core i-series future products. Officially, AMD produces its central processing unit exclusively at Globalfoundries (GF), the contract manufacturer of semiconductors controlled by Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Investment Co (ATIC) and AMD, which complained throughout 2011 about low production yield at Globalfoundries and even signed an agreement, under which it paid GF on per working chips basis, not on per wafer basis.

      <![CDATA[
Apple Inc. has pulled its newly-released 10.7.3 update for Mac OS X from its servers after users complained about major app crashes and a strange CUI errors. While the problems seemed to manifest primarily for users that had upgraded their machines with the delta release, those that had used the discrete Combo Update download fared much better, and it's this 1.34GB "Mac OS X Updated Combined" update that now appears when one runs Software Update on a Mac running Lion 10.7.2 or earlier. Affected users who haven't already rolled back to 10.7.2 may want to try installing the separate Combo Update, the firm said.
