According to Millward Brown’s annual ranking of the world's top brands, Toyota Motor Corp has overtaken German luxury carmaker BMW as the most valuable automotive brand, Automotive News Europe has reported. The value of the Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Hyundai brands improved by double-digit percentages compared with 2012, largely due to strong demand in China and the US, according to the ‘BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands’ study. Toyota's 2013 brand value rose 12% to $24.5bn, mainly because of its significant inroads in the hybrid market, according to the study. In contrast, BMW's brand value dropped 2% to $24bn, because of its lack of new product launches compared with the previous years, the report said.

Toyota Motor Corp is planning to increase fivefold the production of lithium-ion batteries for its hybrid vehicles, Japan Times has reported, citing unnamed sources. Toyota’s battery unit, Primearth EV Energy, will spend about ¥20bn to build a new line at its plant there, which will be capable of producing enough lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 vehicles a year, according to the sources. The automaker currently uses nickel-metal hydride batteries in its flagship Prius and other hybrid vehicles but is now set to shift to lithium-ion batteries to boost fuel economy and allow it to produce smaller vehicles, the sources said.

The UAE economy ministry has said several 2013 models of Nissan’s Pathfinder and Infinity’s JX are to be recalled due to a faulty brake torque member, Emirates 24-7 has reported. The decision was taken jointly by Nissan Middle East FZE and the Consumer Protection Department, although authorised distributors in Dubai said they were not aware of any such recall, the report said. “A concern has been identified in the manufacturing process of the front brake torque member,” the ministry said. :This condition causes a structural weakness in the part, which can lead to development of cracks during vehicle operation,” it said.
