Dubai's legacy of construction projects has influenced the surrounding GCC countries, and one does not need to look very far to discover equally compelling developments. Situated to the northwest of the UAE, the state of Qatar - by capita the richest country in the world - has begun construction on The Pearl, an off-shore land reclamation project similar to Dubai's Palm and World islands. The name for the project was due to the site of the scheme originally being a pearl diving centre.

Finding secure and shariah-compliant assets has always been something of a struggle for Gulf states, but just how far abroad should sovereign wealth funds be looking, and just how diverse should those assets be? These will be two of the questions being mooted in Doha this week as reports in the Scottish media reveal that First Minister Alex Salmond could soon be visiting Qatar seeking vast investment in his country's infrastructure.
