Saudi Arabia earned $16.5bn from pilgrims in 2012

Saudi economists have estimated the kingdom's revenues from Haj and Umrah services in 2012 at more than SR62bn ($16.5bn), up 10% from 2011 figures, Arab News has reported. Haj revenue accounted for 3% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) last year, said professor of economics, Fahd Al-Andeejani. According to figures by the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, some six million foreign pilgrims performed Umrah in 2012.
