Saudi Arabia reduces fuel dependency

  • Saudi Arabia: Wednesday, September 12 - 2012 at 15:17

Saudi Electricity Co (SEC) has said 20% of the kingdom's electricity is currently produced without fuel, as part of a programme to reduce dependence on fuel in producing energy, Arab News has reported. This is achieved through implementing the 'combined cycle' technology that utilises the exhaust gases of the company's old power plants and through its solar energy projects. The programme, which has started about four years ago, would continue for another six to seven years until all power plants become combined-cycle ones, after which the nonfuel production of electricity is expected to reach 40%, said head of the SEC, Ali bin Saleh Al-Barrak.
