Shamoon cyber-weapon made by amateurs - Kaspersky

Kaspersky Lab has said the 'Shamoon' malware that affected the hard drives of 30,000 Saudi Aramco PCs in August was more of a 'quick and dirty' job by talented amateurs than a skilfully-crafted professional cyber-weapon. "The nature of their mistakes suggests that they are amateurs albeit skilful amateurs as they did create a quite practicable piece of self-replicating destructive malware," said Kaspersky Lab's researcher, Dmitry Tarakanov. The malware, also known as DistTrack, struck on August 15, causing major disruption to the Saudi Aramco, with unconfirmed reports saying it was also involved on a similar attack on Qatar's liquefied natural gas firm, RasGas.
