The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) attended the 2013 World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA) World Investment Conference, which kicked off in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 11th of February.
The WAIPA Conference presents a significant opportunity for senior policymakers, corporate executives, investors and investment promotion agencies to meet and interact. With the aim of promoting Sharjah's attractions, economic investment opportunities and tourism opportunities Shurooq delegation - headed by H.E Marwan Bin Jassim Al Sarkal, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority Shurooq CEO, and including Elie Armaly, Director of Business Development at Shurooq and Mohamed Juma Al Musharrkh, Head of Investment Promotion at Shurooq - were looking to foster high profile connections through a series of meetings and networking events after the two-day conference.
Shurooq met with leading business, economic, energy, and trade organisations in Switzerland to discuss the available investment opportunities in Sharjah, and to familiarise potential Swiss investors with the various government departments in Sharjah, their policies, initiatives, business opportunities and the vision of the Emirate as laid down by Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. Shurooq also conducted a series of meetings with companies interested in investing in Sharjah.
Speaking of Shurooq's attendance at WAIPA H.E Marwan Bin Jassim Al Sarkal, Shurooq CEO said: "We are promoting Sharjah's excellent offerings and vast potential across four major economic sectors namely tourism, health care, transportation, and logistics during a number of meetings and events both during and after the conference. Through our attendance here we aimed to engage with a number of senior decision makers and executives with the goal of discussing future cooperation and mutually beneficial collaboration between Shurooq and Switzerland in terms of business, investment, and tourism."
He added: "Our visit to Switzerland forms part of Shurooq's broader strategy, which will see us promote Sharjah throughout Europe this year. We believe that WAIPA is a crucial first stop as it provides a strong platform for connecting with government officials, senior executives from the private sector and representatives from various agencies around Europe and the world."
Switzerland and the UAE share friendly ties that go back several decades. Diplomatic ties were strengthened with the opening of a UAE embassy in Bern in the autumn of 2011 and the signing of a visa exemption agreement covering diplomatic and special passports as well as a double taxation agreement. At the same time bilateral cooperation has been developed beyond the economic sphere to include political, security, cultural, sports, academic, and research matters.
Today, Switzerland counts the UAE as its most important trading partner in the region. Tourism between the nations is also flourishing, with the number of visas issued for UAE residents to visit Switzerland totalling 14,000 in 2012.
Shurooq was established in 2009 with the aim of achieving social, cultural, environmental and economic development on the basis of Sharjah's distinct Arab and Islamic identity, and to encourage investment by adopting the best international standards in providing quality services that help attract investors from the region and the world.
Shurooq's key mission is to provide facilities and incentives to help overcome obstacles facing investment activities in the emirate, evaluate tourism-related infrastructure projects, and lay down the necessary plans to complete such projects.
