  • United Arab Emirates: Monday, March 18 - 2013 at 16:56
  • PRESS RELEASE

The Supreme Council of Energy for Dubai is to hold a press conference on 25 March to announce the plans and progress for Dubai Global Energy Forum 2013, which will take place under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The announcement will be made in the presence of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council, senior government officials and assembled journalists.

During the press conference the tracks and topics for discussion at the second session of the Forum, held under the theme 'Clean Energy for Sustainable Development,' will be announced. Also, senior international figures from the clean energy sector and specialists in sustainable development, alongside experts, government officials and industry leaders will be announced.

The objectives of the Forum are in line with the aspirations of Dubai's wise leadership and support the national long-term initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - 'Green Economy for Sustainable Development,' which intends the UAE to become a global leader in the field of sustainability.

"The first session of the Dubai Global Energy Forum, held in 2011, was a great success. Those positive results are expected to be reflected in this year's session. The 2011 Forum, which was attended by global leaders in the clean energy sector, provided key recommendations and contributed to effective decisions being taken for the benefit of global sustainable development. The Forum underlines Dubai's global contribution in the search to find effective energy solutions, and we expect this year's session to be even bigger and more influential," said Al Tayer.

The 2011 Forum was held under the theme 'Energy Challenges and Opportunities for a Sustainable Future.' Keynote speakers included Dr Mohamed ElBaradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former Indian President and one of its most prominent scientists and engineers.

The first session of the Forum represented a first step in guiding the overall structure of the future of global sustainable development. The 2011 Forum was attended by more than 2,000 participants from various public and private sector companies.

Dubai realises the importance of launching major sustainable development initiatives as a prerequisite to establishing the Emirate as a global leader in clean energy. The city is the first to host the World Economic Forum outside the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Under the theme 'A Forum for World Leaders,' WEF 2012 discussed the need for safe and sustainable energy for the entire world population to power the drivers of continued socio-economic growth. With energy supply an essential requirement for growth and progress, the forum concluded with the signing of the Dubai Declaration, which affirmed the commitment of world leaders and key decision makers to the cause of sustainable energy. It was also decided that 22 October will be celebrated annually as World Energy Day.

Dubai's strategy, furthermore, is not only regional but also global. The Supreme Council's objectives are aligned with the recommendations of the Rio+20 United Nations conference. Rio+20 took place last year under the theme 'The Future We Want,' and drew a roadmap for global sustainable development based on the principles of a Green Economy.
