Syria shuts down Aleppo airport
- Syria: Wednesday, January 02 - 2013 at 03:18
The Syrian government has temporarily closed down the international airport in the country's second-largest city of Aleppo due to repeated attacks by rebel fighters, AFP has reported. "There have been continued attempts by opposition militants to target civilian aircraft, which could cause a humanitarian disaster," an airport official told the news service. The critical transportation hub would be closed for a "very short period of time" while the army worked to regain control of surrounding areas where large numbers of rebels have set up base, the official said.
