Traffic Safety Expo 2012 to highlight the hazards of using telecommunication devices while driving

An announcement made recently by Oman International Trade and Exhibitions (OITE), in coordination with the Royal Oman Police (ROP) confirms the commencement of Traffic Safety Expo 2012 from 16th -18th October 2012 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.

Communication advancements are growing and the need to communicate is growing with it. Although we cannot imagine life without telecommunication devices like cell phones especially in the present era, the consequences of using a cell phone could lead to loss of life and injuries, the statistics of which is unimaginable.

The phenomenon of talking on the phone and texting while driving is gradually increasing and with it the rates of accidents on the roads. The ROP (Royal Oman Police) has attributed a total of 9778 offences related to mobile phones having occurred in the year 2011.

Along with the efforts of the government, companies especially telecommunication companies are encouraged to come forward and promote safe driving habits among drivers, where the usage of telecommunication devices is concerned.

Although the use of ear pieces and wireless/ hands-free devices allow drivers to minimise if not eliminate a reckless driving attitude, the act of texting or making calls, most countries are supporting the discouragement of both acts altogether.

Other driver distraction activities which should be avoided include eating/drinking, reading or writing, grooming, attending to children or pets, emotional conversations with passengers, smoking etc.
