The UAE has approved a new nuclear civil liability legislation holding operators of nuclear facilities liable for damages, Gulf News has reported. Under the new law, the operator of a nuclear facility is solely and exclusively liable for damages arising from a nuclear accident to the tune of 450 million Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), which is roughly equivalent to Dhs2.5bn, said Hamad Al Kaabi, the country's permanent representative to the international Atomic Energy Agency. "The government will be liable for any damages that exceed the liability of nuclear facility operators," Al Kaabi said.
