UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority heads 16th meeting for Arab Spectrum Management Group

Representing the UAE, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) participated in the 16th Arab Spectrum Management Group (ASMG) that took place in Dubai on the 4th - 7th March. A long list of distinguished officials descended on Dubai for the meeting which focused on preparations ahead of the 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15).

The purpose of the meeting was to coordinate the position of the Arab countries present whilst discussing the best approach to defend the region's interests on the global stage that is WRC-15.

"It would be difficult to overstate the importance of ASMG meetings. Such occasions create a fantastic opportunity for Arab Nations to coordinate their approach and in turn, present the collaborative vision of the Arab world to the international radio communications industry," said H.E. Majed Al Mesmar, TRA Deputy Director General for Telecommunications Sector.

"WRC 15, much like other events of its nature, has significant implications for the entire sector. As a result, the radiocommunications industries in the Arab world continue to prioritize attending this global event. Nations will arrive in Geneva prepared to argue a case that defends their national interest and so too must the UAE in conjunction with other Arab countries. This year's ASMG was extremely productive and the high level discussions that took place will act as the perfect springboard for a successful involvement at the WRC 15 in Switzerland," he added.

The ASMG was created by the Arab Administrations to manage and coordinate all issues related to Spectrum Management, the World Radiocommunications Conferences and other matters concerning the coordination between Arab States in the spectrum management field. As this was the first meeting for the ASMG after the last study cycle of (WRC-12), The mechanism of work was updated fir the current cycle till WRC-15 and Eng. Tariq Al Awadhi was re-elected as chairman for the ASMG for a second period during this study cycle which is a remarkable achievement for the TRA-UAE to lead the ASMG again.

The 2012 World Radio Conference (WRC-12) was held at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva from 23 January to 17 February 2012. More than 3500 delegates from over 150 countries discussed around 2000 proposals to modify the Radio Regulations. Building on the overwhelming success of the 2012 event, WRC-15 will generate interest from across the globe as decisions will be made as to the access and use of spectrum. Having significant implications for virtually all stakeholders with an interest in communications technologies and services, the outcome of WRC-15 will also have a direct impact on UAE citizens and consumers.
